A joke that she was trying to get them to, or that I think it would
be fun? Somewhere in some old UK music mag Aphex or someone else
similarly Rephlex-y claimed that Madonna had been going to Rephresh
for about three months, seriously trying Aphex to do a remix. This
was probably in '98 or so. I'll start digging through my old
magazines to try and find it when I have the time, if you're curious.
I am - it sounds so ludicrous I almost doubt my memory.
But I definitely think it would be fun, especially if they
restrained themselves from just fucking the music up, which anyone
can do (I think that makes AFX's version of "Devil's Haircut" pretty
half-assed, myself - it would have been much cooler for him to do
more HAB-style programming than just speeding up Beck's voice, which
an old turntable can do) and decided to make a very interesting new
version out of it, like when Paradinas remixed the Auteurs.
I'll start hunting when I get back later tonight....

p.s. You're definitely right about "electronica" and Madonna, though
- it started around Ray of Light. What exactly is the difference
between electronic music and general and "electronica" - is it just
that one is made to dance to, the other to listen to? The -onica has
always left a horrible, prepackaged saccarine taste in my mouth as it
tries to coalesce genres into one accessible thing. Not that that's
news to anyone, of course 8^|

This is a joke, right ?
