Drama ( as Chris below describes ) is a structural dynamic of all "scenes". Players in a "scene" are, by nature, competitive to gain either favor and ultimately, control, of a "scene". It would be natural that in a "scene" with a large number of players, that strife and conflict would rear its' head. There is an innate quest for dominance and social control in the human species. Even though some may claim to be ego-free with a respect for "everyone and anyone" in their scene, I think that ultimately, human ego actually *seeks* strife and conflict. If there are many players in one "scene", all the more reason that "drama" arises. Its about dividing up slices of the ego pie. Humans are largely animal like and will kill for their share of recognition, love, and respect within their "scene". Think about it, music "scenes" are not much different than scenes found in business and government. Certain elements of togetherness, cooperation and "good times" *certainly* exist within scenes. However, anytime a large group of people get together with a common vision- the next thing to come into the picture is human ego, with a drive for control and the drivers seat. It gets all fucked up from that point forward. The "scenes" that I've had most experience with in my life have been: punk, industrial-noise, and rave. Elements ( or at least pretensions) of anarchy, diy, "no rules", independence, and autonomous thinking have been a staple philosophy of all of these musical genres/movements. Yet, in any scene I've ever witnessed, the old rules and power structures eventually take over- The best thing to do is to stay home.... ; ) Peter np: Piano Magic- Bliss Out, V 13 12" tofu@uci.edu spoke: " the socal scene is way too fucking full of drama - at all angles! for some reason we live in an area with some of THE most talented people possible: lexaunculpt, kid606 (am i allowed to put those 2 names next to eachother these days?:), brad laner, most of the plug research cast and crew (low res, phthalocyanine, mannequin lung, etc), brian lustmord, l'usine, bassland and so many many many other people (like EVERY band from the area that has played up at KUCI) --yet you put *some* of these people together in a small room and they fight like mad!..... it just gets rather frustrating to see artists that i admire quite a bit and have been following since what might be day 1 for a lot of them (i have not left my bedroom for years, okay??) fight and bicker and shit like that. the worst part is that there is, all things considered, not much in terms of a scene here -- yet rather than dropping their bs, people fight like mad......i hope other regions of the world are not QUITE this bad!.....anyway, i guess my point is -- as a fan of the music it would be nice if the personal issues could be set aside so the ideas and music can continue to come out as slick as always!
