I recently rediscovered DEUTSCH AMERIKANISCHE FREUNDSHAFT.. thanks my roommate who picked up some CD reissues, so I figured I'd share some reviews and Mp3's here. To go straight to the Mp3s: http://www.kuci.org/~brianm/daf * "Die Kleinen Und Die Bosen" MEIN GAUT! What an insane, explosive record this is. It sounds like No Wave, with hints of Wire, The Ex, early Cabaret Voltaire, and Throbbing Gristle... but while most of the latter bands took their time to set a dark mood, DAF wasted no time in trying to terrify the living shit out of you here. From what I understand, this was their only record that sounded like this (although I haven't heard their first album "Ein Produkt Der Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft", which is apparently an instrumental noise album)... but has the guitarist Wolfgang Spelmans and bassist Michael Kemner been in any other bands that have done something this fucked up and explosive sounding? * "Alles Ist Gut" & "Gold Und Liebe" The first two of their proto-EBM trilogy. Aaah, "Der Mussolini"... enough good things can't be said about this song, besides forming the basis of Nitzer Ebb's entire career (alongside DAF's "Verschwende Deine Jugend" -- which is even more foreshadowing of Nitzer Ebb). Also "Der Mussolini" is strikingly similar in rhythm to Neu! jams like "Hallogallo" and "Fur Immer", or Suicide.. though there are no wall of resonant guitars, but instead an out-of-tune bass synthesizer and an attitude that's set to influence men to put on precariously sharp leather gear and go molest boys at the local gay dance club. Also "Liebe Auf Den Ersten Blick" sounds like something that either Martin Gore or Vince Clarke ripped for either a Depeche Mode or Assembly song, respectively. I don't have the third of the trilogy "Fur Immer" (not to be confused with the Neu! song of course).. How is it in comparison to "Alles Ist Gut" and "Gold Und Liebe"? Again, those Mp3s can be had at http://www.kuci.org/~brianm/daf if you're interested.. Now if only The Normal had actually released more than two songs.... ======================================================================= Brian MacDonald <brianm@kuci.org> KUCI 88.9 fM in Irvine, CA -- Orange County ======================================================================= --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
