This has to be one of the most fascinating disks I've heard this year
(thanks Peter!).
The album consists of two groups of tracks, some from the early 80s and some
from the late 90's. Yokota usually does mostly house music, but this stuff
is very different. I don't even know where to begin describing it. Basically
its a album full of SONGS, you know, naked, straightforward original
melodies performed by a person. Small tender, intimate tracks that have the
seriousness of spontaneously whispered love songs, sometimes haphazardly
played and definately lo-fi recordings, especially on the earlier tracks.
Having had my fill of noise and percussion this year, what a great
refreshment to hear such interesting melodies and subtle human touches! I
don't have the musical vocabulary to discuss the actual notes and scales,
but if you're familiar with the strange alien melodies of the Residents
you'll know what I mean when I say that you definately haven't heard these
riffs before. The unpretentious cuteness of it all may scare many IDM heads
away, but there is a loneliness too that really grabs you. Those of you who
still have some human organs left in your cyborg bodies, that is, those of
you with any kind of emotions at all ought to at least give it a listen.
These idiosyncratic tunes with minimal instrumentation (usually just
keyboards, guitars, and some singing, almost no percussion) will haunt you
instantly.
