Nothing is more frustrating than reading one > of the idm zines that are out there and reading through 50-100 reviews > w/o one bad one in there. Many of these reviews are for "micro-label" > releases and they all get glowing praise.
there's a reason for that: microlabel stuff usually isn't fed by hype & therefore is more likely to surprise a critic who's already heard a bunch of bullshit announced as the next autechre but which (strangely?!) never lives up to that. add to that the fair amount of people who can't get themselves to say a bad word about anything for fear of not getting any further promos (as you mentioned)... it's the sort of situation you can't do much about. that said, although i don't mind a nonstop barrage of 'glowing' reviews that much, i do have a problem with them when they're uninformative & sloppily written. a reviewer's goal is to find the words to describe music so as to make people understand it better; if they can't, then they're not doing much more than the dreaded 'this suckz / this roolz' routine. but that has more to do with the reviewer's descriptive skills than their tastes. horrible taste can always be excused when the description is accurate. the bottom line, as always: use your imagination! semi-idm content: anyone into the supersilent 4 cd on rune grammofon? i just bought it & i think it's quite nice (although it sounds a _tad_ too synthy at times). ~ david --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
