Umm... I'd guess that what's missing isn't so much humanity or emotion, but primitivism. I tend to listen to a lot of IDM, techno and post rock. This is, by and large, quite highly developed music, either in the content of the music or the equipment used to make it. However, I also listen to a fair bit of indie, punk, singer songwritery stuff, folk and so on. I'd say that the reason that I enjoy this is partly that it's relatively easy listening when I want uncomplicated thrills, but also that it's so basic. For the same reasons reasons that city dwellers drive 4 by 4s, and software companies go paintballing (and for all you romanticists, poets move to the Lake District), a night of clicks and cuts leaves me desperate for something totally organic and raw, and guitars or vocals fill this better than synths. IDM presumably prompts this feeling more than most music because it's so highly evolved. Sorry if I've rehashed anyone's points. This has to be the most thought provoking thread in a long time. jorkens --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
