for great used selections, check out rasputin's and amoeba on telegraph in
berkeley, and the numerous stores along haight st in sf, especially radical
records. when I was there a few weeks ago, the bar next to miss pearl's jam
house on eddy and larkin (forgot the bar's name) had a pretty relaxed trip
hop night going on on fridays. check the sf raves homepage on hyperreal for
all the info you'll need.
