I'd better get this in before someone suggests Meat Beat Manifesto ;) This 3 volume'er from Rhino is really great and is comprised of cuts (long) unavailable anywhere else, vinyl or CD (The Pretty Tony tracks are worth the price of admission alone!). If you're looking for the Detroit slant on all this, get "The Origin of a Sound" (Submerge CD [www.msen.com/~submerge]), which has all that Underground Resistance and Metroplex stuff, which for the most part is still available on vinyl. Check the sources like those on these discs so you can tell who's a lame-o retro copycapitalist and who's a builder. Not that the economic and philosophical underpinnings should affect your buying decisions, but I think that listening to these CDs will give you a sense of the possibilities of this musical style, in all it's dancefloor intent, that aren't being realized in the tranced-out upbeat's DJ market these days.
