Hinterland is indeed SC4; W0 was talking about the next Strange Cargo
album at one point and explicitly referred to it as Strange Cargo 5. I
suspect that the "artist name"/title is a compromise between not wanting
to scare away people who hadn't heard Strange Cargos 1-3 (as "Strange
Cargo 4" might) and wanting people to know that this *was* a Strange Cargo
album (which wouldn't be conveyed if it were called "William Orbit:
Hinterland").

Probably only William and company could say what contributions Laurie Mayer,
et al. make to the N-Gram era Torch Song; their contributions were a little
more self-evident on the poppier IRS-era Torch Song albums. Hinterland vs.
Toward The Unknown Region aside, it's generally pretty easy to tell the
various W0 projects apart (Torch Song vs. Strange Cargo vs. the "Orbit" album
vs. Bassomatic vs. The Electric Chamber vs. his remixes and production work)
but you can hear that trademark bass noise on just about anything he's
ever touched! The Caroline Lavelle album is very obviously not a William
Orbit album but it also just as obviously has his thumbprints all over the
production.

All of the separate "bands" really are separate projects with different
groups of people actively participating.
