From the desk of Astralwerks Mission Control:
Astralwerks Recordings, in association with the CMJ Music Marathon, presents
Phenomena, a special underground dance music event to take place Friday,
September 8, 1995, during the week-long CMJ convention. Phenomena will
transform the venerable experiemental art space The Kitchen (512 W. 19th St.,
between 10th and 11th Avenues), for a 'back-to-basics'-style all night party.
Encompassing two musically and visually distinct spaces, Astralwerks has
assembled an incredible line-up of international, national, and local talent
from its 'extended family' and roster of artists. The upstairs area
willfocus on dancefloor oriented sound featuring a live perfomance by FREAKY
CHAKRA V. SINGLE CELL ORCHESTRA --a soundclash of analog electronics and
funky beats between San Francisco-based producer/remixer Freaky Chakra and
fellow Bay Area cohort Single Cell Orchestra -- plus Dj sets by DJ's REESE
(Liquid Sky Music), TIM HASLETT (Boston Beat/CMJ, Boston), and GRUMPY (TRiP
Magazeen, Florida).
Featuring excursions into experiemental beats, new electronica, and ambience,
Phenomena's lower level will host two live performances -- the first East
Coast US appearance of UK electronic wunderkid MU-ZIQ and in honor of the
Astralwerks release of his album Green machine, a special perfformance by New
York-based mutantrumpeter BEN NEILL. In addition, Phenomena will hold an
encore screening of "TEACHINGS FROM THE ELECTRONIC BRAIN" the 20-minute short
film by the FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON premiered earlier this year during The
Orb's New York City show. Spinning between the various live performances and
the film presentation will be DJ's ORION (Astralwerks), COLLIN MC KINNEY
(Strange? Records NYC), and SHELDON DRAKE (NYC).
This underground excursion begins at 10pm. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15
at the door and are available at STRANGE? (445 E 9th St, off of Avenue A),
THROB (221 E. 14th St., between 2nd and 3rd Ave), and kim's underground (144
Bleeker St). A limited number of CMJ Delegates will be admitted free with
their CMJ Music Marathon badge.
