[snip] i now have these two. i like them both... and in fact i also have some reviews ready: chicks with dicks: musik ohne eier (anodyne 9) it doesn't say so, but this is definitely a martin damm production. but what a record! after three listens, i think it's safe for me to say this is easily the best record out on anodyne yet (not having heard #8, moldiver)... easy listening: the horror mixes! the related tracks on the steel 12" (mille plateaux 21) are commercial compared to these. steely dan guitar, water piano, trumpet scratches, lots of vaguely 6t's jazzy e.z listening and more obscure sample bits dug out from the common subconscious, all soaked in mostly crunchy hip-hop beats (read: somewhat electro-ish, but this is definitely not electro), at 100 bpm and below. never heard anything like it. these *eerie* transformations are certainly more convincing to me than alec empire's "ridicule" approach on "hypermodern jazz 2000.5" (although i also like that one). no, the music doesn't sound spectacular - it's almost as restrained and linear as kaori... but content-wise, damm dares to go where others shy back. (and listen to those track titles: "fett, wurst, suelze, fleisch, brot". yuck! :-) favourite track: b1. bionic skank (pharma 5) again, i'm missing the one before (the dub release). but well i can wait for that one to appear - this is more than enough for now. the first pharma release that i really like. four tracks, all with phat and original beats, clearly structured, neither filled with samples that make me go "ewww" or sound aesthetics that make me go "yawn". doesn't say who made the tracks, but the first track (with an exquisitely disgusting sample) is called "compadre gringo". maybe that's the answer. my favourite track here is b2, and this sounds more like jammin unit to me. whatever. btw, squarepusher is great. greets, p.
