Yesterday, I stumbled across the Emissions #4 "music disk." For anyone who can't figure out what the mod-scene has to do with idm, you should download it: ftp://ftp.scene.org/pub/music/groups/tdr/e9-emsn4.zip This file is about 1.7 MB, and it contains a whopping 117 mod files. The average song length is probably 2 min., give or take (some are 13 min., and some are 30 sec., but most are 1-2 min.). These are some splendid tunes by relatively obscure trackers. The only names I recognized were Hunz and Skaven (but then, I'm no mod expert). I think the overall theme here is sort of a loungy, video game sound. Some of the songs are mellow jazz, some are experimental/ambient, a couple are moody drum & bass, fewer are techno/house, and as expected, some are all-out crazy chip tunes. And one element here is present on every track: a timeless (yes, timeless) video game sound. Put these all together and you have a very interesting, truly exceptional listen. It's a tasteful blend of demo music and idm. I think it's the whole lo-fi thing that makes these songs so damn trippy (yeah, they're trippy - forgot to mention that). Anyway, these particular tracker kids know they're stuff. I used to think tracking was all about computer geeks who paid no attention to general electronic music before I heard this. This has given me a sort of new respect for mod music. If you download this, e-mail me 'cause I'm curious to see what other people think about it. (Btw, I couldn't get the exe file in this disk to work, but no worries; the mods are still there.) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
