Greetings,
I'm interested in setting up and maintaining a mailing list devoted to
the discussion of Detroit techno. I have no particular time period in
mind, nor any particular style. The hardcore of UR, Jeff Mills, and The
Vision; the proto-techno of Saunderson, Atkins, and May; the IDM of
Dan Curtin; the original funk of Cybotron; the techno in space of Kenny
Larkin; the mad-electro beats of Drexciya; Hawtin, Baxter, Fowlkes;
Craig, Metroplex, Transmat, Submerge, +8; anything and everything that
is electronic and made by a Detroit area artist or directly influenced
by Detroit techno would be fair game.
Alright that is the idea, but what is the idea behind the idea? IDM
has a (great) list, ambient music has a list, UK techno has a list,
and breakbeat has a list, but nothing really for techno in general
or Detroit techno in specific. Alt.rave and alt.music.techno have
yet to live up to their potential and as more people get Internet
access the situation won't get much better. I think the time has
come for a Detroit techno mailing list. To some extent, Detroit is
the birthplace of techno and it continues to produce a variety of
talented musicians. As techno continues to mature and expand in
exciting new directions artists from Detroit will be leading the
way.
But, before I stake a portion of my time and computing resources in the
above I would like to here from anyone who is interested. Is it a good
idea? Would you subscribe? What would we call such a list? Any comments,
questions, pointers, or suggestions are welcome. I don't think it would
be to good an idea to continue the discussion on the IDM list so I'll
ask you to respond to me personally.
Thanks for your time,
- George (b242smil@utarlg.uta.edu)
