Kent, fix your mail header so it says "from kent@cadsi.com" like it used to :) From idm-owner@hyperreal.com Tue Jul 12 07:59:24 1994 From: "Kent Williams" <cadsi.com!kent@elvis.cadsi.com> Date: Tue, 12 Jul 1994 09:10:29 -0500 Subject: Peter NamLook/Orb My local record shoppe got in 'Air 2' by Namlook this week and I'm finding it to be quite a treat. I like the mix of live instruments and voices with synths. Track 9 has a lovely bit of a soprano singing with a synth following her ... and track 7 has kalimba, which is my candidate for the next Didgeridoo. (We have in Iowa City probably the greatest American kalimba player. He's downtown on the pedestrian mall playing during the summer) The packaging on this was a little weird. The tag on the outside says 'Made in Great Britain' The cover art says 'Made in Germany' and the label says it's world aw003. No where is FAX mentioned. In other news, I was the 1st in Iowa to write the guy at Island Red Label's promo company, so I got a package with a slug of Orb Posters and buttons, and an unlabeled cassette of Pomme Fritz. I listened to it a few times, and there's a couple of tracks I really like, and a couple that are, uh, supremely goofy. The ones I like are the one's with beats. One in particular has a steady beat but no drum sounds at all -- instead the beat is made by repeating a really fucked up sample of something. Reminded me a little of things people did in my Tape Music class in high school. The first track is really pleasant bit of almost Grateful-Dead-ish jamming with a guitar player, who doesn't sound anything like Steve Hillage. Now there's a collaboration I'd pay good money for -- Dr. Alex, Thrash, Mickey Hart and Jerry Garcia. It could happen -- someone claimed to have seen Jerry at the Namlook/STC gig in SF last year ... I think I will have my 'orb party' at work tomorrow, and drag my fellow CADSI employees into listening to the tape over lunch. Most of them are either Led Zeppelin or country music fans, so I should get some interesting comments from the good doctor. Plus pictures of nerds in ties standing in front of our Corporate Pond ... -- ___________________________________________ / If you're a kickass X11 programmer and \ These opinions are cursed, | you want to move to Iowa, drop me a line | and not those of my employer, | Kent Williams -- kent@cadsi.com | whose are blessed. \___________________________________________/ Send me groovy MIME attachments!
