yeah i was lucky to find this one in a 2nd hand record store here in Melbourne. there is a numbered limited edition split 7" of 500 that comes with the SBOTHI collaboration as well. you get a bit of the classical record manipulation and also cars being ripped apart kinda metallic sound. as well as putting out the retrospective 50 CD box set, Extreme have got a 10 track low-priced MERZBOW SAMPLER that spans the early material action pieces through to the 90s feedback style..

i got into Merzbow hearing some of the tracks off this on late night public radio. at the time i thought it was some of the most beautiful music i had ever heard, and the whole package of the CD with the liner notes explaining the recording makes it a winner. for sake of description it's more "isolationist" ambient than "lie down and be reborn" ambient..

i haven't been following Akita's output closely, but AKA MEME sounds rather interesting. then again i thought the SCUMTRON Remix CD (Blast First UK) would be interesting too, but it just seemed as if most of the remixers (let me cite Panasonic and Autechre here) had no clue on what to do with the source material! the Bernard Gunter track on it rocks though. chase up BALANCE (Cripple Dick Hot Wax GER) for the ideal Merzbow party accompaniment. it's a split collaboration with a pop group called Ladybird and the cool thing is that you get Akita in say the left speaker and trashy bubblegum pop on the right. so you can adjust the balance control on your hi fi to suit your taste in soft and hard music accordingly.. imho Mego seems to have put out some really *boring* releases lately under the auspices of `serious' work. so what if Goem use medical sine wave generators. give a fuck? context over content = hype.. I dunno anything about what makes Goem tick, so whatever. I do quite fancy both the Goem 12" and the Pure 3" CD (the latter one of the best releases on the label, IMO). I'm not exactly sure what makes these more "serious" than other releases on the label, however (other than the fact that they're not by an artist called "Fuckhead"). -rob np- Shirley Collins/Davy Graham _Folk Roots, New Routes_ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
