Hey folks! I got this info from the Warner Bros. Records section vai my AOL accout. Unfortunatly, they don't list the tracks, so I wonder if the US CD release will have the extra track. What's the scoop on the "Brilliant CD Box?" Anyone wanna describe what it looks like? -Porter AOL: PorterMR@aol.com Internet: kmr4@ra.msstate.edu ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Fri, 25 Mar 94 00:47:44 EST From:portermr@aol.com To: kmr4@ra.msstate.edu Subject: Aphex Twin Aphex Twin (Album Release 4/12) Title: Selected Ambient Works, Volume II Label: Warner Bros./Sire CD: 2-45482 Selections:[all selections are untitled] "The first word of this song is 'discorporate'" Personnel: Richard James, all instruments Producer: Richard James - Aphex Twin is the alter ego of one Richard James, a reclusive 22-year-old Englishman who utilizes home-brewed electronic instruments and common household objects to create music that soars with its own alien logic. In the process, he's managed to singlehandedly redraw entire continents on the musical map, pushing the sound of techno off the dance floor and into your brain. - "Selected Ambient Works, Volume II" contains more than two hours of music (on two CDs housed in a Brilliant Box) culled from his most recent sessions. It's decidedly quieter than previous import releases, but no less visionary. - More propulsive is the just-released CD maxi-single containing the new single "On"--a hypnotic spiral of sound that comes on like Kraftwerk being mercilessly shredded in a particle accelerator. It's not on the album, so don't say we didn't warn you up front, okay? - Richard is on the cover of Option magazine as we write this, and he's already been the recipient of a solid year's worth of out-and-out raves (no pun intended) from the British press. - Aphex Twin has recently wrapped up a U.S. tour with Moby and Orbital. He'll be performing in the States again shortly, probably accompanied by some other British ambient types. - In the past few years, Richard's output has been nothing short of voluminous. He's released records under the names Polygon Window and The Dice Man, as well as remixes for Curve, St. Etienne and others. Look for another Aphex Twin album later in '94. Brilliant Box is (I believe) just the normal cd 'jewel case' with a clear disc tray (instead of black). Many companies have come out with alternate cd holders and give them names like this (e.g. digipak, Compac Plus, FLP, &c.) I don't think there's any way they could possibly fit it on unless they dropped another track. The running times on the Warp CDs are 78:27 and 77:04, and the missing track is >10 minutes in length... there just Ain't No More Room. the sire records press release sez:

i know there's a smiley there but i just wanted to point out that the 74 minute limit was never a technical limitation, just something that manufacturers agreed upon because it kept quality control costs down to a reasonable level... /jon

approx 82 minutes if you really squeeze the tracks together... there's no guarantee that any given CD player will be able to actually deal with it, though... my friend had a player that just wouldn't cope with anything past 74 minutes, it would start stuttering and skipping around 74 mins. "Brilliant Box" is a trade name for a 2CD jewel box that's the same size as a normal 1CD case. (GPAD3, the orb's Ultraworld US reissue, etc.) -- Lazlo (lazlo@unm.edu)

Oof. Shoulda known this one. This is the correct answer. A nifty contraption really. I did the cover for a cd of an Indian musician here in Calif and we used the Brilliant Box. Only problem was, people didn't know it was a double cd, and were leery of buying a single for that much money. The markings on the case aren't very bold, and even though I had specifically put 'double cd' on the cover, we still had to throw a sticker on it. Related ObIDM q: The CND Psychotic Reactions/Give peace a dance 3 cd came in a similar package, but the disc tray opened from the opposite end (Brilliant Box opens from the spine). Anyone know what this one is called? I liked this one better. Well, for whatever reason, some CD recorders have a maximum length limitation of 74 minutes. I'm not sure why, though.

The maximum length of music on a CD is 80:36. Longer CD's are possible when programmed breaks of silence are used between the tracks.
