Think this was meant for the list. Thanks. :Phlu-id ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Sat, 4 Dec 1993 16:59:21 -0700 From: Jeff Holland <holland@spot.colorado.edu> To: idm-owner@techno.Stanford.EDU Subject: Ambient-dub vol. 1 -Divination Anyone have comments on the new Bill Laswell- Divination Ambient Dub vol.1 (SD7001-2 Subharmonic) CD??? Picked it up by accident thinking it was a US release of the import Ambient Dub series... It has a lot less melody than the Material (Mantra) stuff I've heard, but is definately ambient and dub with some pretty heavy duty "sub-harmonics".

It does have a few good tracks, especially the last one. Too much of it is just cheesy generic synthesizer washes or very run of the mill techno with a slight dub influence. I think in order for dub to work well it must have a really punishing bass and it just isn't happening on this disk. When I saw it on the shelf in the store I thought it would either be an interesting example of an older more experienced artist responding to new movement in music, or just an attempt to jump on a trend. Judging by the scarcity of worthwile ideas, I'd have to say it's the latter.
