There were rumours, there were whispers but nothing seemed to be
forthcoming. People use the term "long awaited new album" far too flippantly
but in ISOLÉE's case that term doesn't even begin to do it justice. Five
years ago, after a handful of 12'' singles (including the now bona fide
classic "BEAU MOT PLAGE"), RAJKO MUELLER released the "REST" album which
blew minds around the world. House music had been stagnant for so long but
Rajko found new ways to breathe life into it and made it sound as exciting
as the day it was first born in Chicago. He also did something else, he
created something entirely new and fresh sounding and made one of the few
"dance" albums that stood up to long term listening. To this day it sounds
like it came from another world. In the intervening years there have been a
few more singles and several acclaimed remixes along with a few whispers
that the next Isolée album would see Mr. Mueller go disco. And now that day
has come and "WE ARE MONSTER" is here. The first time I listened to it was
in the company of a friend who is another huge Isolée fan. At first she
wouldn't believe me it was Isolée until after a few minutes she made the
following remark - "Actually, you can tell it's Isolée by the way it goes
all mad and wonky and shit". Quite! So, yes it is a bit wonky and yes it is
a bit different and yes it is a bit disco. Not disco in the conventional
sense but some mutant 21st century hybrid of beautiful, melodious but
disjointed melodies, space noises from another galaxy, strange basstones and
percolating drum patterns. It also goes far further than just disco as while
that music is designed specifically for the dancefloor, "WE ARE MONSTER" is
making a fantabulous soundtrack to my movements around the city and my
spacing out time at home too. Beautiful music from one of the greats. The
wait was worth it.

Justin Martin is one of the few house DJs that successfully bridges the
gap between being commercially successful and staying true to the
underground. His sound has been described as both melodic and tough, with
releases ranging from the dynamic & smooth "Brazilian" on Utensil to the
boomtpy "Cats & Dogs" on Classic. Justin first gained international acclaim
for his single, "The Sad Piano," on Ben Watt's Buzzin'fly label. The
singlemade its way into many A-List DJ crates as well as receiving
many accolades
from critics. He considers himself lucky to be making music and is always a
humble, but rocking presence on the dance floor.
With a strong Freshman year behind him, Justin was rewarded with a
nomination as "Best Breakthrough DJ" by the 2004 International House Music
Awards. He and his production partner, Sammy D, have also been honored in
the "URB next 100." This year he has followed up his last year's House Music
Awards nomination with *two more*! This time he is selected in the Best
Breakthrough Producer category and as Best Breakthrough DJ for the second
year running. Nice one, Justin!
Thanks to his phenomenal mixing talent and precise ear for what moves a
crowd, Justin has established himself as the next generation of San
Francisco house with the skills to hang with the current Masters. Tonight
he'll be dropping a special KONTROL set of chunky, teched-out future house
that you really don't want to miss!
