I've finally decided to have a go at Venetian Snares' music, but am slightly intimidated by the volume of stuff that he's got out there... is there any consensus on a good (ie fairly representative, fairly good) place to start? Thanks David -- "And then what do they do?" "Er, quadratic equations mostly, sir. Fiendishly difficult ones by all accounts." I would say the planet mu releases and addict records releases if you're into more musical sounding stuff (the newish impossible to pronounce rossz csillag alatt született and chocolate wheelchair are high on my list). If you want some noisey-noise then go for the now quite collectible shitfuckers! Or making orange things. Other noteworthy releases are the infolepsy and the winnipeg is a frozen shithole releases. And of course there's my first sample of snares full length work, winter in the belly of a snake. Classic. Hope this was somewhat helpful. I think either Chocolate Wheelchair Album or Higgins Ultra Low Track Glue Funk Hits 1972-2006 would be good places to start. Neil On 7/29/05, David Sim <pmxds@nottingham.ac.uk> wrote:

hard to say what's really representative... personally, I think Huge Chrome Cylinder Box might be a good place to start if you're coming at things from a strictly synthesized angle... Doll Doll Doll if you're more moved by jazzier bits... and Rossz... if you're into rebuilt rhapsodies... Stupid Chocolate Wheelchair is a smart bet, too... as it has a fair amount of variety... kicks off with a medley of X-Ray Spex and the Coronation Street theme... and reworks Motley Crue's Too Young To Fall In Love later on... also features a Dr. Who flavoured nod to Abelcain (Marty's Tardis) and a track which features samples from all the original Lovebug films. Of course - there's always the first cd... pritf('shiver in eternal darkness') - but I don't know how available that one is anymore... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Songs About My Cats is a very cool album in retrospect. his first LP, right? has some classic VS, but real lo-fi, strange piano interludes, and just a fun overall psychedelic, loose feel to it. but i agree that good starting point be Winter In The Belly (i think that 13th track is my favorite of his) and Huge Box (i'd say his most accessible, and created very consciously so).

I think that this discussion is kind of indicative of how broad snares' work is. Everyone has a different opinion of what is his best and a good place to start at (a good thing). Dj fishead is right when he said to come at it depending on what you want to hear. However, Winter In the Belly is the first one I heard by him, so that's what you should start with, obviously!(ha!) just my 2 cents On 7/29/05, nat hawks <natbot@hotmail.com> wrote:

Ah yes, this is a question that Vsnares fans will be debating for ages. Everyone seems to have a different opinion, based on what order they heard the albums in and their receptivity level at the time of hearing each. That said, I would strongly recommend the following. In my opinion, these are his most artistically developed, thematically cohesive, and original albums: Doll Doll Doll -- overall dark and evil mood, classic goth breakcore sound, and I still think Dollmaker is the quintessential Vsnares track Songs About My Cats -- overall quirky and silly mood, lots of sound experimentation and wacky interludes Making Orange Things -- pure noise assault mode Winter In the Belly of a Snake -- very original take on breakcore as he takes it in an ultra-digital and dark clipped electro direction Rossz Csillag Alatt Született -- infused with interesting string samples and arrangements, jazzy touches, and the classic Vsnares manic breakbeats Personally, I'm not a big fan of his more varied albums like "Higgins Glue Funk Hits". I feel like they have lots of great tracks on them, but they usually don't hold my attention for the entire length because they seem to have no cohesive connecting element or distinctly unique quality. I especially like the poppy tracks on Chocolate Wheelchair like "Too Young", "Einstein-Rosen Bridge", and "Sky Painted on Car" because they're so unusual for him. But I have a hard time with the record as a whole. And I really wanted to like Huge Chrome Cylinder Box, but it ultimately bored me.... perhaps because it seemed like a less inspired, less original, and happier-sounding rehash of Winter In the Belly of a Snake...? Meanwhile, I've basically ignored his EP's and "sequels" (like Find Candace), just because it seems impossible to hear or get everything by him. I really wish that Aaron Funk would exert stricter quality control on his output and release fewer albums with higher overall quality. Todd

VS is a tricky cat alright, I'd advise to check out some albums of his online via sites or p2p to get a feel of what album is to your taste, cause there are huge differences in style/sound between the seperate releases -- "progress doesn't come from early risers progress is made by lazy men looking for easier ways to do things" http://n3wjack.blogspot.com http://www.jungletrain.net - 24/7 dnb radio station
