I would have to say that the few Flaming Lips ep's that I have off of the "Yoshimi Vs. The pink Robots" (or whatever that album is called) are pretty embarrassing, in that they have this whole sissy thing about them, what with the lead singers falcetto voice and the indi-rock guitar strumming and kinda candyflipping hipster lyrics. Whenever I play that stuff I feel sort of dorky. Add to that list Funkstorung "Disconnected" which a good third of falls into the gay sissy vibe catogory, and Telephone Tel Aviv's latest effort. Not that I'm homophobic or anything, but when the emotional black man trying to sound like Bjork starts singing how he got his heart broken by a grey haired man in high heels, it's a little wierd. Actually some friends of mine were trying to describe that album, and the only adjectives they could come up with were "gay" for certain songs. Which BTW isn't a bad thing. But it's totally wierd when you try and fit that music into the context of those artists other work, especially Funkstorungs' kinda more flexing hardcore DSP bad-ass muthafucka hip-hop testosterone macho tracks on that album, it's like they either are trying to appeal to various "music marketing" demographic niches or have some wierd bipolar identity crisis going on. And Telephone Tel Aviv went from IDM that people that don't like IDM like, to not really IDM that people that like IDM think sounds like smooth jazz diva stuff that should be played at some stupid yuppie bar or some sleek stupid "design elements" kind of store that sells slick modular couch ensembles made in italy or something. --- Theorema Binario <theorema.bin@gmail.com> wrote:

Why should you be embarrassed about anything? Tastes change, people change, and your current tastes have been constructed and informed by what you've ingested. The older you get (hopefully), the more you'll get over having to make a case for or widen a distance from what's found a place in your decks. I remember tossing off bubble-gum for acid rock, tossing off prog for punk for synth pop for goth for alternative for you name it....and going back to try and find that pieces of that stuff later for collector's prices when it has gone out of print, if only for the wonderful cheese factor. Pop music is disposable, but don't fall prey to feeling stupid over something that doesn't fit the current grid. jeff np-anything by Sandi Patti --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I see nothing wrong with any of those.. although Toy Soldgiers.. humm.. Ok, that one sux it. But Fishy- did you get one of those "young free and gay" 12" from stunt rock? From the cover you would think it was genius- but it isn't... Oh well. Best! Actually, on this note--perhaps we should change "most embarrassing album" to "most camp album". Just to get that combination of embarrassment and pride that comes with loving the abject. pomohomo, Luis p.s. DJ Assault, "Y2K Off da Chain" On Apr 25, 2005, at 2:46 AM, Andrew Hime wrote:

I'm with Mr. Garcia, there ain't nothing more ennobling and embarrassing as trying to explain the utter enjoyment derived from a track called 'ass n' titties' -- explain that one to your grandma. "hoe! hoe! hoe! hoe! hoe! hoe! hoe! hoe! " my IDM winner: Higher Intelligence Agency - Freefloater... ouch! the name says it all! non-IDM winner: Bobby Conn - Self Titled... on the sleeve is a little googly eyed felt cut-out of Bobby holding a mic in one hand, and a inverted cross in the other... what could possible go wrong? j e m On 4/25/05, Luis-Manuel Garcia <lgarcia@uchicago.edu> wrote:

Trio. Don't remember the name of the album, just that it has that song from the Volkswagen commercial from years ago - "Da Da Da I Don't Love You You Don't Love Me Uh Huh Uh Huh Uh Huh". Probably most embarrassing just for that song title. forel On Apr 24, 2005, at 1:01 PM, Jeff Kiecker wrote:

Aaaaah, touche'!! You really get to the heart of the beast there :-) I've been following this thread and it's brought a few smiles as well as raised memories of long-forgotten songs. Yes : all the Vulva track-titles are equally pun-ishing. And the cover of the album Vulvic Yonification is somewhat cringe-inducing too. While on the subject, I think I'd have to agree with Jeff, theREALmxyzptlk, who wrote:

I've got tons of dead wood in my music collection but would I want to get rid of any? No way! It's my HISTORY. Am I embarrassed? In the same way, no. If friends were to go scratching through my records and pull out something with a quizzical expression, I just shrug my shoulders and laugh - it's like having big hair and shoulder pads in the 80's. Yes... I too did that. HAH! From the cockpit is one of the albums that got me into IDM... it's one of the first i heard. And really influental to my music! Great stuff!!! most embarrising would be probably some chicks on speed CDs, those shitty red snapper EPs on warp, and some chemical brothers... but i'd be most proud on these babies : MARVELLOUS CAIN - GUN TALK (SUBBASECD3) BABY FORD - FORD TRAX (bford3) MR. Actually, you pole vaulted over a few genres to make the leap between Can and Thrill Kill Kult. In order to adequately convey why a whole (dare I say?) generation of people tossed off prog (temporarily, at least) would require more than an email can carry. The more apt comparison might be Yes' "Tales From a Topgraphic Ocean" to "Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols" - it has more to do with a sort of sea change in listening whether it's in an individual or a group and the perceived need to distance one's self from yesterday. If you'd have been around then, it wouldn't need explanation. Nor was it wholesale - Can seemed to transcend what a lot of punks wanted to move away from. That's just a tree in the forest, though - my larger point was about going back to (at least partially) embrace what you had at some point left behind and not apologizing for it. jeff -------------- Original message --------------
