This is a big thank you to all the clever engineers/musicians that put a funky little song hidden before the CD plays that you have to actually rewind past "zero" to find. -- Mr. Tangent [the binary police] www.mrtangent.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Sounds like you might have chanced across your own version of Non's "Pagan Muzak"! ...Or even Mick Harris' "500 Lock Grooves"!!! :-) What I miss about vinyl is ...well, several things, actually! Related to the above, the little inscriptions between the run-out grooves were a perpetual source of amusement and intrigue. For instance, when I finally one day bought Crisis' "Alienation" 7" and it had "...now for Death In June" inscribed between the run-out grooves, I was amazed! :-) Secondly, covers which are of a size where you can fully appreciate the artwork! Joy Division's "Closer" just HAS to be owned on vinyl for this reason alone! Such releases had more "atmosphere" (pardon the pun!) or mystique than these little squares of paper under generic plastic covers. CDs just feel insipid by comparison - as if the music is contained in a test tube. Thirdly - a major gripe of mine - artists seem to have forgotten the art of creating "the perfect 45-minute album"! Yeah, yeah - it's "back in the day" nostalgia, but... Such albums as Japan's "Gentlemen Take Polaroids", Kraftwerk's "Computerworld" and John Foxx's "Metamatic" work because they're the length they are. I feel that, these days, artists have lost the sense of restraint that would enable them to achieve such pop perfection! There's too much "filler" on alot of CDs, basically! Ok - pro-vinyl rant over! Pro-CD mini-rant to follow! Did I show my age in this mail? Oh well! ;-) Clive "Oh my! I really ought to save them! ...But I *am* in my pyjamas. Oh well! Absolutely in agreement on this one. Not that there aren't some long-playing masterpieces (76 14, for instance), but especially early on, I think there were a lot of people who were just amazed that they could put 74+ minutes of stuff all on one single piece of plastic. I mean, sure there were double and triple vinyl behemoths in the olden days, but not to the extent that came into existence with the advent of the compact disc. Some of the best albums are the shortest. Aphex's RDJ Album is a classic, clocking in at what, 34 minutes or something? Cylob's Cylobian Sunset isn't more than 45 minutes. Even lately, I think people are getting back to more manageable releases in terms of length. Secret Frequency Crew's album is like 54 minutes, maybe? Not a wasted note. None of the above statements are based on absolute fact. Feel free to pick apart my humble opinions as you see fit. Agreed, but I'm really loving the output of Spekk at the moment (http://www.spekk.net) - only three releases so far, but lovely minimal electronica and their card cd holders are an absolute delight. Rune Grammofon's digipaks are rather lovely as well of course. I agree with you about vinyl as well though.

You mention three faves from my teens there, but Bjork for one has mainly released 45 min cds. No filler on Kraftwerk's Tour De France which 55.51 long (imho).
