I'm surprised I haven't heard Menomena mentioned anywhere on the list. They're a 3-piece band from Portland that uses software to help them compose or generate song structures. Their first album is "I Am the Fun Blame Monster" - an anagram of "the first menomena album" ... kinda sophmoric, but... Their music comes out sounding kind of electronic, even glitchy at times, and then swerves into indy-rock sounds, and then goes back. It has some good variety with sax-o-ma-phones and piano and organ and stuff. I just heard about it a couple of days ago, although the title sounds familiar, like I've heard it mentioned somewhere else before. I've been listening to it for a few hours and I find at times I wish they'd stop singing, and then there are long stretches of instrumental playing where I wish they'd start up again. Kind of a paradoxical recording. I'm not saying it's some wonderful, amazing, best of 2004 kind of thing, but it's an interesting album and I'm wondering what anyone else on the list thinks or knows about it. ? -Adam damek.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

just for the record, "the double gone chapel" was on my top ten this year, and i found it to be a breath of fresh air in a vast sea of stale idm releases. i'm a huge two lone swordsman fan, and this release sounds just like the rest, they're doing the same thing as always, just this time they're using some guitars and drums to go long with it. -kiya ----- Original Message ----- From: Kurt Bernhard Pruenner <leak@gmx.at> To: Sounds Made By A Dying DSP <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Thursday, January 06, 2005 1:13 PM Subject: Re: [idm] Re:Menomena?

jumping into this thread late, as a result of just listening to the double gone chapel now... it sounds a *lot* different than "tiny reminders"... almost like they're channeling the spirit of coil in places. if you're the kind of person who likes the idea of tls+coil, there's absolutely no reason for you not to like this. personally, i be digging it. -michal On Thu, Jan 06, 2005 at 01:17:01PM -0800, kiya i am a copier babzani wrote:

mixing rock and electrons... i got to see telefon tel aviv play at knitting factory while touring fareneheitfairenough and i was absolutely blown the fck away. i loved the album and was amazed at how they pulled it off live, perfectly. all these amazing looping guitar, and all the bass was played live! too bad their last album was the biggest piece of poo-poo these two ears ever sat through... oi. and of course, mum! seeing them tour their last album, summer-whatever, really made me appreciate it more... as all those weird sounds you think are synthetic in nature and mostly real. yeah, there's a laptop and some synths, but there are also people playing little bells, whistles, melodicas, ancient gramaphone-violins,... they are amazing live. there was one point where the whole band slowly started picking up bells until six people were just ringing these wonderfully tuned little childrens bells. i love them so. i finally got a bunch of midrange by Dykehouse... not crazy about all of it, but very impressive and mostly super fantastic. just like everyone says... totally shoegazer, dude! anyone head that Capitol K/Happy Happy? i love all his stuff so much, but am worried from what i've heard...

And now to bring it back to semi-tangential IDM relevance: there was a sketch in an episode of Chris Morris' Jam set to Mahna Mahna (or however you spell it) and I'm pretty sure it involved a clarinet being stuck up the ass of a man in bondage gear in the middle of a forest. Oh... and the clarinet then produced some of the sounds going on in the soundtrack. Something whacky like that. Thanks for the link. Its been a while since I've seen this video. -Aaron ----- Original Message ----- From: Jason <jason@mercerfriendly.com> Date: Thursday, January 6, 2005 5:04 pm Subject: Re: [idm] Re:Menomena?
