here are some comments i posted back in december of last year about the murcof ep on context... The Murcof ep features an innovative mix of clicktechno and orchestra samples (of all things) from this Tijuana, Mexico producer. when i first heard a description of the music i was a bit apprehensive but after one listen those reservations were dispelled. think dark piano chords, violins, cellos all delicately interacting with sparse percussive movements. I'm eager to hear his new album on leaf but if you want to check out his Context label release, there are free mp3 previews from the Context label at: http://www.context.fm/09.html I remember reading that Murcof has his own website with audio samples in it but i cant seem to find the url at the moment... -- -->-Lance---- PO Box 450715 Westlake, OH 44145 United States --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The Murcof Martes CD (Bay/Leaf)...very cool, quite different sounding - crisscrosses the ambient/IDM boundaries effortlessly without sounding derivative, trite or canned at any point. Kicks up some nice, dark atmospheres using snatches of piano and what sounds like acoustic instrumentation; these build - I hesitate to say "layer", as it's never that thick, but usually almost minimal - into electronically punctuated, yet organic sounding (at least some of the time) pieces. Nice melancholy, dissonant feel. There's an occasional whirr and click (as well as fairly strong rhythmic patterns throughout) which will intrigue the IDMer in the family, along with a sound palette which might appeal to the ambient listener and enough experimental ambition with which the pastiche is glued to make this likely to be a crowd pleaser for many kinds of electronic music aficionados. Makes for very nice rotation with the new Biosphere. Right now it gets my vote for originality which leaps beyond novelty. jeff --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Thanks for all your input idm'ers! Caught the digitonal show at the National Film Theatre and it was wonderful. I have never heard such a great use of the violin/POD/effects thing before, and it was a really nice summer evening to boot. I think everyone in attendance (which seemed to be a lot of 'em) were really blissed out and having a great time. -ALSO- Smallfish is the bomb! Murcof makes great stuff, very nice! lush and ambient but also a lot more. I have such a hard time describing this stuff. Any more ideas for the next couple days please send em my way ... Having a great time in London, thanks to you all! dave --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

here here! i second the notion. i'm sure there's been plenty of talk re: 'martes', definitely a top release in 2002. his latest, 'ulysses' (leaf 12", doc 37), is another jaw-dropper imho. two tracks (each 10 minutes plus) of compelling, slowly-evolving electronics. the sound? yeah, tough to pin...but fairly unique if you're placing murcof in the idm/techno context (no pun intended). possible keywords (other than classical-music-influenced minimal techno): filmic, exploratory, enthralling, subtle, strange...darkness. boomkat wrote a better review for this one. asg --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Eyes open for the whole Static Discos label - excellent stuff moving from Mexico across the electronic landscape. jeff --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
