Yes, "or something like that." Although I'm personally not a big fan of her work, it's a bit presumptuous to draw the conclusion that she owes her career to Autechre because of her ties to one of its members, as if a female artist cannot stand on her own -- what year is this, anyway? No one has said as much outright although it seems to be the implied sentiment... However I do miss Plone a lot, so if anyone hears of their whereabouts or new releases, please post to the list! m.mercer :: design + sound design :: http://www.matthewmercer.com/ sound :: http://www.mattmercer.com/

Neotropic should be easy proof of a female artist who can produce IDM and have original talent. Mira Calix does not. Sadly, and I intentionally didn't want to bring this up in my original post because of the 'female/male issue' (i just wanted to focus on the music), I actually believe Warp continues to keep her on BECAUSE she's female. If she was a guy, she would never have been signed. And as far as my "tutor" comment, that was true. Her first couple releases had tracks "co-produced" with Gescom. Pin Skeeling has some familiar Autechrish sounds as well. Connect the dots. So, sadly, she's cheated her way in so to speak. She never mailed a demo. She worked at Warp and liked some of the tunes, then became "friends" with Sean Booth, had some help with producing, and with their support was easily signed and writing an album. Take away the mastering and quality equipment and you have an artist who's a good 2 years away from getting signed. Shit she should only now be thinking about mailing demos. I just feel she's not exactly earned her way to where she is. Machine Drum, Nautilus, Fennesz, or even Ulrich Schnauss (to go the poppy route) could happily fit in with that 'Warp family' and help continue the label's tradition of quality releases. To me, her existence there taints their image. Maybe I'm too harsh, I don't know. at least i'm topical. -Mark M Mercer wrote:

you assume alot hhhmmm....do you work at warp and know what those folks think and why they signed her ? or any artist for that matter.....

so when an artist collaborates or has a co producer they are cheating ?

you should do PR for warp, see if they are hiring//.... someone commented earlier that lots of artists leave the list, i can certainly see why. Mira's credibility shouldnt be called into questioned, what Warp artist do you know would remix a relatively unknown artist simply because she liked the music, and was paid only in copies of a ltd ed 600 copy 7".......i am speaking from experience and direct dealings with her Mira Calix is a class act all around cj

alright this is the most salient bit of info on Mark:

So, what is the good demo? How do you know when your 'sound' is right for the masses, and more importantly, of course, the record labels? 'a good 2 years'? and how exactly do you calculate this evolution of talent? ok, so you don't particularly enjoy the album... actually i can probably imagine what your record collection looks like, because your sort of thinking is like a virus... inspiring a similiarly lazy and polarized standpoint,(scientifically and sociologically explained by the Peter Principle-look it up) it's quite possible that if you don't have 'that tick tick followed by that bump' then it ain't hip-hop, and if your kicks aren't on the one and the three&1/2 then it ain't dnb..true it won't be, and the music will be more than better for that very reason since it doesn't stringently stand inside the square confines of drawn in, paint by numbers genre music. with your same warped low freq synth stabs and scuttling tambourines. whatever, enough energy expended on this, back to what matters. --- c <c@scarcelight.com> wrote:
