some near-random (really!) recommendations... the new tomas jirku CD (_entropy_, intr_version) is to say the least very good. the dub influence is really present, & very well integrated in tomas' sound palette... the whole thing is pleasant to listen to from beginning to the end... anyone into both heavy microsound-type processing & deep, laidback dub (basically, anyone who enjoyed the best moments of kit clayton & vladislav delay...) will definitely enjoy this. & there's some surprising noisy peaks here & there, to spice things up. you can see that there's been an awful lot of work put in this. actually, i'd be tempted to say it's tomas' best CD so far. it outdoes even _variants_ in terms of variety & 'pushing the envelope'. one last word on the rhythmic architecture: sometimes subtle, but it's always as inventive & twisted as you can expect from tomas... a great disc; check it out. on the abstract compositional tip: coin gutter continue to baffle with their new CD-R... _the promise of lomonosov_. it's rather short but definitely worth hunting down if you've enjoyed their previous work. rawer at times, more refined elsewhere, & with shorter songs, which means that it doesn't have the narrative complexity of _truth lifting up its head above scandals_. but, it opens on a very poignant piece meant as a dance soundtrack which would justify a CD release on its own. they're a very interesting act to follow who involve themselves a lot into their work; i'm looking forward to everything they do. as frequent no type visitors will have read about already, there's a new series of mini CDs around, from v.v.'s label, throat. the first 4 are excellent... & they come in a pretty sort of packaging. like coin gutter, these guys are developing a truly innovative approach to abstract music & sound, which incorporates both found elements & 'wanted' compositional gestures, all the while doing far more than just 'bridging a gap'; what, i have been waiting to hear something like this for ages! now, of the 4, i think i most enjoyed the cal crawford disc... but i'm sold to everything this guy does. at any rate, this seems to me like a series to look out for... have a nice day ~ david --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
