Spike is rumored to be a collaboration between Takeshi Muto (aka Romulo del
Castillo of Phoenecia/Schematic) and Phonem. I picked this up with high
hopes and while it's certainly not bad, it's not super-memorable either. I
haven't played it a lot, and since it's on vinyl only I can only listen to
it at home, which means a lot of other things win out on playback time
instead.
this is on the rice & beans label (affiliated directly with the beta bodega
coalition) and is called "Operation: Binary 24" and is on 12" wax only.
There is a rumor by Patcha Kutek, who Forced Exposure seems to think is Jake
Mandell, although I was under the impression that Patcha Kutek was _also_
Romulo del Castillo. This stuff is confusing.... and the B.B.C. intends it
to be as such.
In any case it's not a bad record, and if you like Phonem you'll probably
enjoy it, although it's not quite as interesting as you might think. I'll
have to give it another listen just to confirm tonight... who knows, maybe
i'm completely off base. i often am :-)
(as a side note, nothing i've heard on rice & beans seems to be all that
fantastic. nothing too bad, again, but their projects on other labels have
been much more exciting, i.e. schematic, morr, etc)
