Can anyone tell me about this release? I believe it is on Beta Bodega(if that is a label too). I heard that it might be or in part might be Phonem. I've seen a 12' of this around, but is there also a cd available? And what is it comparable to? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

It is Phonem and in my opinion one of his best releases. Most people who record for beta bodega take on an alias, its part of the whole underground activist thing they've got going on. I don't think theres a cd version of it. Its basically a very beat heavy, glitchy dance floor oriented ep, I tend to play it out a lot. Phonem submitted a top 10 which I have posted on record camp, its a rather interesting selection, not one that I would have expected. ~adesh http://www.recordcamp.com -----Original Message----- From: kingmob@nmt.edu [mailto:kingmob@nmt.edu] Sent: Thursday, February 14, 2002 11:15 AM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: [idm] spike Can anyone tell me about this release? the spike ep is by phonem alone, it is no collaboration. and i have that on the highest authority, phonem himself told me. hs -- _____________________________ fossil fuel for fossil people --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Spike is rumored to be a collaboration between Takeshi Muto (aka Romulo del Castillo of Phoenecia/Schematic) and Phonem. I picked this up with high hopes and while it's certainly not bad, it's not super-memorable either. I haven't played it a lot, and since it's on vinyl only I can only listen to it at home, which means a lot of other things win out on playback time instead. this is on the rice & beans label (affiliated directly with the beta bodega coalition) and is called "Operation: Binary 24" and is on 12" wax only. There is a rumor by Patcha Kutek, who Forced Exposure seems to think is Jake Mandell, although I was under the impression that Patcha Kutek was _also_ Romulo del Castillo. This stuff is confusing.... and the B.B.C. intends it to be as such. In any case it's not a bad record, and if you like Phonem you'll probably enjoy it, although it's not quite as interesting as you might think. I'll have to give it another listen just to confirm tonight... who knows, maybe i'm completely off base. i often am :-) (as a side note, nothing i've heard on rice & beans seems to be all that fantastic. nothing too bad, again, but their projects on other labels have been much more exciting, i.e. schematic, morr, etc)

Its kind of like takeshi muto's stuff on schematic if you know that. If it is in fact a collab of takeshi & phonem or not - it sure sounds like it. I've got samples on my distro site, of the rice & beans release http://www.rhinoplex.org/wrecked/audio/rice5-a1.ram http://www.rhinoplex.org/wrecked/audio/rice5-a2.ram http://www.rhinoplex.org/wrecked/audio/rice5-b1.ram I think i might have one copy left, i'd have to check. The cut he has on the Plan De Austeridad Beta Bodega EP (with red fist on cardboard cover) is wicked, highly reccomended. Tough ass beat with nice synth action, very strong tune. SOZER_SHT http://www.wearechangeagent.com/ SHT004: SWOON EP out now.
