Lately I've been getting a kick out of tracking down late '80s and early '90s dance remixes with chopped-up vocals. A lot of these sound like precursors to Prefuse-73 and other IDMers. Here's a couple of examples: Bass Bumpers: The M.E.L.L.O.--the rap's all stuttery Lisette Melendez: Together Forever (Berrios Beats)--reads: "Edited at Prime Cuts, N'Y. with a Razor Blade" It's pretty cheesy stuff, but the vocal tracks are insane. Anyone know of other examples? There's a track on Brian Eno and David Byrne's "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" (1979) album that featured chopped up vocals. I think it was called "Mea Culpa", but I haven't got my copy of it to hand. Anyway, it's been much sampled over the years. 808 State's "Leo Leo" springs to mind. -- Mark Stevens http://www.insertdisc.com/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yes I love this album! This is timeless shit, although I wouldnt call it pre-IDM as much as "proto-IDM". It still sounds current today. I'ts by far I think the best thing Brian Eno has ever done, probably David Byrne too. Anyways it's funny because I heard they clashed a lot in the making of this album and hated each other afterwards. Funny how that can make something really great sometimes. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email alerts & NEW webcam video instant messaging with Yahoo! The big thing about this album (and it's a longtime favourite of mine) for me is that it was the result of discussions between Eno, Byrne and Jon Hassell except that Eno and Byrne went ahead and recorded the album without consulting Hassell - the album might have been even more amazing if he'd been involved. Hassell and Eno are firm friends but he's apparently still angry about this. One thing that's a shame is the cd mastering makes the sound fairly thin. All the best, Colin.

I agree, an extraordinary album. Everyone on this list should own it. Much as I love Boards of Canada, I've always reckoned that "Telephasic Workshop" is a rip-off of "Mea Culpa." :) -nj --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

If you like that, you should check out the vocal treatments on the DJ Food mix of David Byrne's 'Fuzzy Freaky'. It's very much in the Prefuse 73/Brothomstates mode. I have it on the Wire Tapper vol 1; not sure where else you can find it though ...
