the whole aesthetic around that commercial looks a lot like chris cunningham's work on bjoerk's "all is full of love" video. the focus hatchback is a poor copy of a honda civic 3dr, in any case. it's "detroit" marketing, as usual. -a. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i wanted to stay silent on this b/c 313 just went through this. Ford isn't "exploiting" any one. This was done with Juan's consent, and I would _think_ he saw the commercial before it came out. The DEMF was the city of Detroit recognizing its Techno history, people were exposed and came from around the world...is this any diff't than a ford commercial? Isn't that being a bit elitist and selfish with the music? Many people complain about how America will never become educated about the music and thus they will never understand what "we" listen to or why the shite they are spoon fed by aweful dance radio stations isn't what techno is. For most, if some one approached us to use one of your tracks in a commercial or video game...you'd be pretty geeked.think about it. Also, realize that most of the people who see this commercial won't realize what they are listening to or the impact Juan or this track has had...and will pass it off as just another commercial. So, which do you want...for it to be passed off or for it and the music used to be recognized, leading to people researching it, leading to people buying it, leading to _quality_ producers actually making a living making music? If anything, its a shame it took this long for a Detroit based company to use such a influential Detroit based artist. The topic also arose of Ford's past for being an anti-Semitic one. I think its about time we let this one go. To get personal, I am Jewish, and you can only be angry at certain parties for so long before your anger feeds their longevity rather than their disposal. On the quality of the focus. To get personal again, I am in the market for a new car. I have driven the focus-and for its class, it is one of the best. I have test driven _everything_. In Europe, it was car of the year and has tested highly. For the price range I'm in, unless I want to lease, it doesn't get much better. The car is roomy, comes with _many_ features as standards that others do not, is well designed in and out and ABS breaks as standard. I've researched cars till no end and its come to the focus and another brand (Subaru)-which I can only afford to lease. At least its not Kia or Suzuki. Besides, who is any one to judge a decision of some one else (in this case Juan's)? Like any true friend of some one you admire, be happy for him and his success. d --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yes I saw it too, not sure what to make of it, undoubtedly some young pup at the ad agency sold that very very very hard to the "focus" focus people: I can imagine the pitch now: "the car's urban, edgy, gritty, you might say cutting edge...." "what about these detroit techno fellows that have been getting so much music press recently... who's that girl, stacey mullan? or DJ Rap? mmmm she's quite Urban..." "do those djs types buy cars?" "oh yes, so they can get to their rave parties, don't you know." "mmm can we squeeze that demographic?" "ah yes as long as you can squeeze 2x1200s in the trunk.." "ha ha ha"... <snip> just wanted to echo diana's comments. and this being posted on the idm list, which initially grew out of an aphex twin list, i thought i should point this out: years ago (maybe even 5?) aphex twin's music was being used in commercials: i can remember the commercial for Pirelli in particular because it won some awards. There are essentially 2 different kinds of music used in commercials: a) unknown producers who work 9-5 M-F and write "television music" for a living (and i'm not knocking these people; they are many musicians who work in the background and/or who have anonymous music-related dayjobs, john tejada, for example, had/(has?) a dayjob doing sample cds; personally, my dayjob is pding at the local campus/community radio station; the bills *do* have to be paid, anyway, i'm offtopic); they (the unknown producers) are often asked to *imitate* certain songs/sounds/etc and they do this because it is their job, and, b) situations such as this with atkins where a track such as atkins' is used in a commercial. i'd much rather hear, personally, b): atkins' track in a commercial with atkins getting paid and proper credit, than a) with a ford focus commercial where someone who paid to make a track *like* atkins'. and, regardless of how we feel about ford/cars/etc, i can speak from experience re: an artists' music being used in commercials: i'm no atkins (far from it), but my music has been used in radio ads, theatre, film, documentaries, etc, and it is extremely flattering (and even gratifying) to know someone wants to use *your* music (out of a myriad of choices) as the music bed, for whatever it is worth (and i'm not talking money here), instead of just some anonymous beat. tons of thought and money is put into what music gets used in a commercial for a huge company like ford. heck, mills said his biggest goal is to do soundtracks and he did the metropolis soundtrack on his own (initially) because he just *had to* do that kind of thing to satisfy himself. we shouldn't take this for granted (artists we respect doing/having their music used in commercials and/or doing soundtracks) and we should feel proud that juan atkins' music is used in this commercial and not a moby or fatboy slim or unknown. not wanting to drag this out, just wanted to add my perspective. pardon the rambling, i haven't been to bad yet (due to my "dayjob") andrew "don't forget about the fundraising auction on http://techno.ca/cognition" duke :) np minnie ripperton--adventures in paradise (1974/epic) not her best album -- Cognition/Andrew Duke's In The Mix 3rd annual Fundraising Auction for CKDU is now underway: http://techno.ca/cognition auction ends Wednesday November 29 at 12noon AST --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
