Oooh, way to tie it all back in. :P
Anyway, IDM isn't too bad of a name, it's just pretentious. It's no
more pretentious and stodgy than any of the recommended alternatives
(i.e. ELM), however.
I think the root of the problem is that genres are usually irrelevant,
artificial constraints placed on music to make it easier for people who
aren't familiar with the music to talk about it superficially.
I still don't know what genre I am and I don't really care- that's why I
jokingly first came up with "laptop rock" in the first place (for a
flyer) which, unfortunately, is now being used by people and critics
(yes, they're mutually exclusive :P) as an actual description.
