A freind of mine is a pretty serious house / garage producer (System 69 as his mum doesn't call him). In an attempt to enlighten him, I lent him a copy of Selected Ambient Works. He was impressed by it, but what suprised me was that he remarked on the incredible drum programming on We Are the Music Makers, something that I hadn't really noticed. I'm guessing that this is because I''m not a serious producer, and have no real idea of what's hard to program. I tend to assume that if its fast, it must be difficult (probably since I'm used to 'real' instuments). So, here's a question for you more production oriented types: if I wanted to seriously impress the guy, what should I play him? I'm really looking for pretty mainstream idm: Aphexy, Autechrey type axis. Try getting hold of an mp3 of Autechre's "Blifil" (from the second Peel Session) if you want to scare your pal with some complex, meaty rhythm programming. -- Mark Stevens http://www.headspin.clara.net/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

hmmm. . .i'm imagining that what really got him about WATMM is the way the drums comingle with the bass, very sexy. it's certainly not difficult programming, but it definitely works in the right way. as a budding producer meself, i'm kinda at a loss as to what to recommend to your friend. if he finds the drum programming on WATMM "incredible," then i really can't think of much that i KNOW will rock him. older beaumont hannant might work for him (speaking of, where the hell is any newer beaumont hannant???), older atom heart material like "milagro" (sort of on the proto-tech-house tip, excellent swingy programming). . . good luck! it's always fun busting idm cherries! -jeff p.s. apologies for that last one, ladies. it's sunday morning and i'm still in my "saturday night lech" mode. . ."Say, baby, wanna come to my place and see my. . .compressor?" -------------- 1642 try 621 -------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Better yet, play him some Richard Divine. His remix of "come to daddy" on the Warp 10+3 comp is one of the most highly programmed tracks I've ever heard. He must use at least 300 samples in that track! Amazing... Also, funkstrorung, most ae, and the rest of schematic records are good choices too. -andrew
