Okay, I know I promised to post the summed up responses about the electro thread to the list, but I have a midterm and a paper due this week... Anyway I WILL finish it soon and I'm actually going to put it up on my web pages, which I will post the URL when I'm done. So what I'd like to add are some recommendations of old school electro tracks that I could list on the pages as well. Here's a few of mine to begin with: Hashim - Al-Naafiysh Newcleus - Jam On It (instrumental) Imperial Brothers - Welcome Dub (Instrumental Dub) Dynamix II - Just Give The DJ A Break (I know this is Miami Bass, but it still kicks ass) The Egyptian Lover - Egypt, Egypt JJ Fad - Supersonic (Instrumental) P.L. - TransEuropa-Express (that's right! an electro Kraftwerk cover) I know some of those aren't STRICTLY electro, but what is? Here are a few that deserve mention and should be in EVERY electro collection: Kraftwerk - Tour De France (Francois Kevorkian Remix) Kraftwerk - House Phone Cybotron - Clear Herbie Hancock - Future Shock (LP)

check out Dave Clarke's "Electroboogie Vol2 The Throwdown" (studio K7 http://www.studio-k7.de/ ) (vol1 isn't bad either) for a pile of top class electro (nu & old). People just don't believe Dr. Dre was involoved in this at all.... ahhhh for a piece of linoleum and a quite saturday afternoon of breakin' bodyrockinbody

There's this four-volume set on Tommy Boy which just came out and it's all about New York Electro funk and early hip hop. "The Perfect Beats (New York electro Hip Hop+ Underground Dance Classics 1980 - 1985)" An example of its almost scholarly completeness is that it contains Trans Europe Express, Numbers, *and* Planet Rock. Runs the gamut from no-wave to new wave, from Pebbles to Cybotron to Art of Noise to Sugar Hill Gang. I don't own it yet, but I'm definately picking it up soon. I'm not a DJ (so I couldn't justify tracking all this shit down on vinyl) but I know all these tracks very well from when I was a wee one listening to late-night Power99, the R&B station in Philly (where I grew up). WARNING - all you dyed in the wool funk-, house-, 'n diva- haters out there (and I know you're there!) should beware - this comp contains music made in the days before electro was "discovered" (read: co-opted) and reinvented as IDM by people with tight bootys . - Cf ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - c h r i s t ø p h e r f ª h e y . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ chris@raremedium.com 2 1 2 - 6 3 4 - 6 9 5 0 x 2 5 8 http://www.raremedium.com - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - . _ . - ' ^ ' - .

Just catching up on some older e-mails about the "old school ELECTRO" thread. I remember hearing these tracks (see below) for the first time and not quite sure what the hell it was! After listening to these on my gigantic BOOM box (anyone remember those?) on cassette's from radio broadcasts' on WTLC (Indianapolis,IN.). I still have them and from time to time I have been known to drop them into the old ALPINE tape deck. Play at Your Own Risk - PLANET PATROL Planet Rock - Afrika Bambatta and the Soulsonic Force Clear - CYBOTRON Jam On Revenge - NEWCLEUS Al-Naafiysh(the soul) - HASHIM etc. etc. etc. I would say that "Planet Rock" was pretty much everone's favorite with umpteen mixes of that floating around the country. Although not "electro" per'say, ZAPP's "More Bounce To The ounce" was a personal favorite and then later Herbie Hancocks "Rockit" and mixes shortly after breaking mucho ground! Gosh I feel somewhat "old" after dusting off those memories. BTW we just called this style "Electric Funk" or "New Style". _____________________________________ ---------------------------------------------~ Curt King cking@xnet.com COLUMBIA AUDIO Chicago,IL.USA.EARTH "Taste is the enemy of art" _____________________________________ ----------------------------------------------~

The depressing thing about it is that I used to have quite a few of the street sounds compilations and the electro compilations. Still, there is a guy in my home town who has a complete set of these two series... I'd love to get them mp3ed, but that'd take a long time... -- hjw

I got this great CD out of the whole "$4.95 CD-World-Explosion!" (actually, haven't been charged for any of the 12 boxes of CD's that have shown up @ the Reckankomplex from MyShopNow yet, anyone else have this happen?) on Tommy Boy (1992) call "Don't Stop... Planet Rock, The Remix EP" which features 7 versions of said chestnut by LFO, 808 State, DJ Magic Mike, Kupper/Moretta, Elektric Music (Karl Bartos of Kraftwerk & Lothar Manteuffel), as well as the Afrika Bambaataa & the Soulsonic Force original and a Bonus Beats track. It rules. As does 'Rockit', esp. the extended 12" mix versions. I understand Laswell did a total of three records w/Herbie, although I can only recall 'Future Shock' and 'Perfect Machine', both of which are pretty damaged... Along the same lines (not sure about releases, legitimacy, etc...) is this guy named 'the Egyptian' who did a slew of tracks in the classic era, most notably 'Egyptian Lover'. Excellent. -Våt ____________________ Reckankreuzungsklankewerkzeuge PO BOX 382864. Cambridge, MA 02238 http://www.tiac.net/users/sheket/index.html

I can't find this track on any of the electro compilations.I have the Street Jams: Electro Funk Parts 1-3(Rhino) and Electro Funk Vol One & Two(Priority). Is Al Naayfiysh and other more obscure tracks available that I have not noticed. I am a DJ so most of my attention(and money) is devoted to vinyl so I haven't shopped CDs in several months. Any realy incredible Japanese or European compilations? Have Mantronix seen reissues?

I have a '92 or '93 release of this track on a Network label (UK acid/bleep label that disappeared around '94) 12". It has a couple of bleepy remixes and then the original in full glory. The vinyl is clear and center label orange, sorry I don't remember the cat #.... I have to wonder if the bassdrum is as big on the original pressing, since the track sounds like it has '93 mastering rather than '83... no Robert Gordon remix tho' ;-( Solenoid

i can't say anything about any strictly electro compilations, but why not support the label that put this out as their first record? go to http://www.cuttingnyc.com and get it in various forms on the cd compilations sold from the site. it's still available on vinyl, which kind of exposes some ahistorical bent of the commonly-discussed labels (what does "out of print" say beyond the labels' having thrown their history to the moneyed collectors?).

"network classics" was some sort of reissue project they had going (though i do seem to see new ones every once in awhile). the only one that ever appealed to me was the one (also orange...hey!) with kevin saunderson's "the groove that won't stop" and paris grey's "don't lead me (neal howard remix)" - man, i got chills when i held in my hands ONE piece of vinyl containing two "fat chance" tracks (cf. under one sky). not sure why hashim appeared in this series (early on, too), but i don't live in england and there could have been some champion-esque licensing by network going on, none copies of which ever made in to the bins i ever dug.. eric onnow: bad religion, "no control" (epitaph)

This can be found on vinyl, too. There are a lot of white labels ofrealy sick electro remixes coming out. Don't miss these.

He actually recorded as Egyptian Lover. He recorded a lot of records!Just missed him at a party in New Orleans. I was too busy to go but I am sure that it was great. I hope that he can get his career going again.
