I also know that i had a really difficult time "breaking in" to this scene, though i don't think that's necessarily a "woman thing"...guess i'm just kind of thinking aloud here. dunno...any other thoughts?

the "IDM" scene kind of have this arrogant mentally about the music being so "intelligent" that most girls wouldn't understand it and that they only want to listen to dj keoki or at best orbital. I notic ethis a lot at local record stores when girls go look at the "experimental" or "aphex twin" section (there is a store in san diego which says that everything on warp or rephlex is an aphex twin side project, I kid you not.), the guys that work there are like oh now, you want this armand van helden record and they try to sell them some mix cd as if being a girl instantly turned you into a candy raver without a brain. It's like there was pressure to be a dj hanger on or something. you're right, it is hard sometimes. i mean, i'll go into a shop and experience what you're talking about all the time. the guys who work there automatically think i don't know jack about the music because i've got blonde hair and makeup on. it's really frustrating when they're pointing out the latest happy hardcore and i'm looking for the complete opposite. one guy in Chicago actually CHOKED when i asked for the new mu-ziq EP awhile ago...it's crazy. the most important thing is not to judge on appearance or the fact that somebody's a girl or a boy. i mean, just because somebody happens to be a boy at a party doesn't mean that i assume he's a know-all, and just because somebody's a girl doesn't mean they're clueless either...if you go around making assumptions on shit like that you're gonna miss meeting a lot of really hip people, right? im not a chick.. nor am i hip, but... i think i sometimes act shocked when a girl asks about certain kinds of music -- not because i do not think that should or because i think they are not able to understand -- but because around here its RARE. i think its neat, and im super supportive of such things, but again, it is just rare. in fact, maybe im not as bad as i think.. i act shocked whenever i find someone into this music -- because around here.. and everywhere im finding.. its RARE. on the flip side.. dont discredit someone (boy or girl or whatever) just because they dont like the same stuff you do :) i only say this because sometimes im guilty. "what? what do you mean you didnt *enjoy* the masonna performance?!" yadda yadda chris (whos still hoping to meet that catholic school girl obsessed with nurse with wound :)

hmmmm, don't think I've ever been aware of any prejudice in dat direction when I've been out on one of my trawls for sublime soundz ... maybe tis because they're all used to seeing me now in the record shops, it helps if you frequent the same ones so the lads behind the counters get to know what you're into and then they go all out to pull out all kinds of interestin stuff that they think you'll find tasty... for example, Dave Cawley at the ol, sadly now departed Fat Cat shop, was a real sweetheart, a total gent, whenever I used to go in there, he'd spend aaages pulling out all this stuff for me that I hadn't heard of before, all dis freshest of da fresh whities, and then he'd be runnin in the back of the shop, pullin out all these posters and freebies for me too, and when the shop was closing down, he went and got out this stock of rare ol Rephlex/Warp/Clear stuff that they'd been hoardin and let me go thru it all, kept bringin out more and more and I was like "ohhh ooohh Stop man", cos my heart was racing and all my precious vinyl seekin antennae were being over stimulated into frazzled, electrocuted quiverinwivering wrecks and I'd already spent waaaaay too much! I think perhaps because I'm used to the situation now, where at most of the IDM type nights I go to, its usually 90-95% lads, so us lasses are always in the minority but I don't ever really think about that factor, as I'm there for the music and dancin and bigfuntimes ... At the shops, I'm too busy searchin thru the racks to care if I'm the only girl in the place, the "only" record shop in London where I dooo have to take a big deep breath before entering, is when I'm at the top of the stairs which run down into Blackmarket's Junglin heaven basement ... and lookin down I see this sea of hardcore junglists, all shaved heads & huge puffas, 6 or 7 men deep at the counter, not a single nother lass there and i'm thinkin " tis waaaay tooo much testosteroooonie for me down there! Help mum!" but the lads behind the counter (ooops NO, at Blackmarket, they're definitely M.E.N. not lads!) again, don't ever show me any prejudice, they have respect for anyone who's deep into the soundz and I think they like it when someone's chattin away with them and havin a laff nstead of just barkin trainspotty demands at them, like the lads do ... tis just a matter of them gettin to know you & you them ... and then its respect all round! (Only lad you have to watch out for at Blackmarket tho, who WILL take advantage of yer womanly status, is this adooorable little black kid, must be only bout 11 or 12, who hangs out there every Saturday ... and he's always squirrelin his way thru the wall of tuff ruffneck junglists to get to the front of the counter and get a place on the decks, desperate to be one of "da big men" and his little bods junglin away like craaaazy, ohhh he's a totally wicked little dancer, and all the blokes behind the counter are swattin him away, tryin to get him to clear orf, cos he doesn't have any money to buy any vinyl ... Anyways, one Saturday, his cheeky likkle eyes lit up when he saw me come down, and he had this big mournful look on his darlin little face and started scrabblin around in his pockets, pullin out all these pennies and countin them, layin them all out on da counter, then looked all crestfallen when he was waaaay short of da mark for the record he wanted ... and he'd already tried askin all the lads in the shop if they could lend him 10p or whatever, but they were all pushin him out of the way, tellin him to shove off ... but one look at all his pennies laid out, scattered all over da counter and his crestfallen little face when he couldn't buy his fave record cos he dint have enuff pocket money left ... well, I just had to buy it for him, dint I? and then a flippin 'nother one as well! but then last time I was down there, the lads workin there warned me, that apparently every Saturday now, he hangs out waiting for me to come down, ignoring them all completely when they tell him to shove off, cos he's hoggin the decks ... and he tells em "naah, I'm waitin for da lady wif da long blond hair who'll sort me out, mister" So laydeeez you have been warned, there's one little lad there who's just waitin to pounce on another sweet sucker of a girl like me, to sort im out ... and he's pretty hard to resist, he's such a cheeky chappie, awww bless! That reminds me...I went to Chicago for the 4th of July Jeff Mills/Claude Young/Surgeon affair. The day after I went to check out Gramaphone. Still on a techno vibe, I picked out a stack of records. When the employees say me standing in line behind all the boys for chance at a turntable, they made a special place for me to listen up the the DJ stand they have. I felt special :) It's nice to know they support we aspiring female DJs. -carter At 11:59 AM 10/22/98 +0100, you wrote:
