I hesitate to recommend the Sugarhill Gang records as they do sound kind of dated at this time; but tracks like "Rapper's Delight" and "The Message" still get me off. There were some really cool records done back in the day by Tom Tom Club, which was people from Talking Heads working in the hip-hop genre that are absolute musts. Beyond that, Biz Markie, Kool Mo Dee, Stetsasonic, etc. There is a very cool record I picked up in Rotterdam -- Stetsasonic's "Talking All That Jazz" which features the original track + a 'Bonus Breaks and Edits' (a must for any beat miner, these are fresh as hell!) and an absolutely lovely jazzy house remix by Dimitri from Paris (Dim's Respect for the Old School). This is supposedly a single from a new Tommy Boy compilation "Tommy Boy's Greatest Beats" which would be essential as well. On Mon, 19 Oct 1998, laerm wrote:

I won't even try a list of recommendations because A.) It's too easy to argue old-school personal preference and B.) The list would be too damn long. However, if you point your browsers to www.beatstreet.com you'll find just about anything you might be looking for. And if you can drag your ass out to the borough of Brooklyn to visit this fine establishment you will find yourself in old school heaven. Mr. Magic's Rap Attack compilation LP? Boogie Boys' 'Fly Girl'? Audio Two 'Top Billin'"? Damn straight son. This store is a block and a half long. Fucking ridiculous. Originals and (mostly) boolegs (but you don't care cause you're in it for the music right?) of your favorite old school jams. -Christina PS- If you visit Beat Street, be sure to bring your credit card and a valid photo ID, because you don't want to be carrying the amount of cash you'll need around the Fulton Mall, and they like to confirm that the card actually belongs to the person attempting to charge with it.
