You're making sense but you've got a few facts wrong. First he wasn't always insane, he just snapped one day (according to a recent interview with Rick Wright). So a lot of his stuff was written when he was fully functional. Second, being insane does not mean you are completely devoid of all conscious thought. Crazy people think, too. There's just a low signal to noise ratio. -Michael I read a lot about Barrett when i was younger, and it was never apparent that he snapped one day. Everyday, he would take sugarcubes drenched in lsd and sometimes he would just stand on stage and play one chord for the whole show. A lot of the songs he wrote on the madcap laughs are pure nonsense, but then again, most of the songs on ummagumma are too and if im correct, waters ended up writing a lot of those.(ie:several species of small furry animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a pict, by waters) i dont have to remind all of you that many insane people created the best art ever made, with vangogh as an example, (but i read that the reason he went insane is because he drank so much absynthe.) just my 2cents. philip:

irrelevant, but i thin van gogh went insane because paint used to be made with lead in his days, and painters are wont to lick their brushes... but then, i'm no art major, so i'm not sure. :: wells oliver / s0ewoliv@titan.vcu.edu / http://mute.simplenet.com :: 'try to smile as they devour our youth'

no, no, no. he may be being provocative, but he's not making any sense. he is saying that to validate art it needs to have been created with the intent to come out the way it did. pardon me but this definition is utter bollocks, and would exclude any artist who has attempted to inject some chance into the outcome of their work, whether it be jackson pollock splashing paint or aldous huxley scoffing acid. and this is ignoring the number of absolutely bobbins artists who are just born that way. whether its an accident of birth or some deliberate mind altering fuckery, art is always more interesting to me when there's some madness in the mix. and i don't think any number of happy accidents or severe mental disability can discredit authorship, because that's just arguing that someone with a physical or mental illness doesn't count as a person any more. but yes, just being nuts doesn't make anyone great. at anything. -martin

yeah, no kidding. those artists have the most calculated music and identities of pretty much anybody discussed here. eric onnow: jake mandell:midwest(lucky kitchen)
