I've got two books on the go right now. One is an advance review copy I was sent of a book called "200 Beats per Minute" by Eddie Beverage. It's set in the rave/party scene in Orlando, and deals with that whole culture, as well as the gay/bi sexual awakenings of the main character, Danny Boyle. I get the impression that it's sort of semi-autobiographical. I've only gotten about a third of the way through it (it's short, around 170 pages), but it's not a bad read, really. Once I've finished it, I'll do a proper review. The reason I've set it aside, though, is the second book I'm reading: "Filth" by Irvine Welsh (best known as the author of "Trainspotting"). I just started this one this morning, actually, and I'm about 50 pages in, but it's as good, funny and dark as I expected. Main character is a disgusting, hateful, racist, sexist, corrupt sargeant on the Edinburgh police force. Imagine "Bad Lieutenant" turned into a black comedy and relocated to Scotland, plus Welsh's usual playing about with the written word. And I've also got the usual stack of comic books beside my bed which I read a couple of each night. Last night, it was issues 4-9 of "Palooka-ville" by Seth. Greg

For those with an interest for Irvine Welsh, I heartily recommend the bright and moving "Maribou Stork Nightmares", perhaps his best work to date. His caustic, cynical sense of humor, strangely enough, makes you empathize with the protagonist -- even though the main character is clearly a rat bastard, he's still a human being. I am currently reading Ballard's "Crash" and re-reading Hickman's "Twins" trilogy. It's good that someone else has brought up this topic. Last night I was reading the most recent issue of Obsessive Eye and pondering the overwrought style, so common amongst writers discussing "this music". It would be churlish not to applaud their efforts but I thought Debris was much better at this kind of thing ten years ago. The same bunch of pseudo-philosophers are always cited, as if that magically lends credibility. Music: thanks to CiM for the Electronome recommendation; finally listened to it last night - rather nice. adam

For the hell of it and because I think he was a fantastic writer, I'm reading "The Shifting Realities of Philip K. Dick" edited by Lawrence Sutin, full of story sketches, philosophical writings and bizzare author bios he wrote for his books, as well as (for the same reasons) "Savage Art - a biography of Jim Thompson" by Robert Polio. Also, a textbook from last year called "telecommunications and the city - electronic spaces, urban spaces" by Stephen Graham and Simon Marvin. I'm guessing the lack of capital letters in the title is to make it seem "hip," "cool" and "current". Nevertheless, an interesting look at how telecommunications have/will/are alter(-ed)(-ing) the way cities work. all the while watching old episodes of "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" and listening to music that sounds kind of like Autechre. Didn't really feel like weighing in with a reading list before I found a fellow Jim Thompson fan. For the past month, I've been devouring the darker side of detective fiction, beginning with Dashiel Hammett and Raymond Chandler, then with a big jump ahead to James Ellroy (The L.A. Quartet, American Tabloid, the L.A. Noir trio), then a side-step to Thompson classics like The Killer Inside Me, Pop. 1820 and The Grifters. Spillane was great for the span of about one book, until I realized they were all going to be Dirty Harry clones with diminishing returns, but there are plenty of hard-boiled classics out there by Chester Himes (Grave Digger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson, two black Harlem detectives with more than an inclination towards violence), David Goodis, and Ed McBain (police squad books, similar to NBC's Homicide). Another great recent book is Commodify Your Dissent by Thomas Frank (editor). It's a mountain of grist for the chin-stroking mill, a collection of articles from Chicago magazine The Baffler, the leading '90s muckraker (old-schoolin' H.L. Mencken style) behind delicious and powerful deflowerings of Wired, Nike, Wal Mart, various youth-culture manipulators, the world of business management, and even the recording studio (courtesy of an unsurprisingly hilarious article from Steve Albini). Highly recommended... Also, Too, Plus: Jazz Singing by Will Friedwald; definitely the best book on jazz vocals, certainly the best book on vocals, quite possibly the most <enjoyable> book about jazz ever written. Any issues ever produced by the incredible, usually tremendously out-sized Acme Novelty Library -- available at comic-book stores, but just about as far away from the infantile as you can get -- sorry comic-book fans ;) The ubiquitous Generation Ecstasy -- it's been sitting in my room for a week now, but I just don't have the heart to pick it up after the lashing it's received here (that and the fact that it might bore me)... Oh Well... .John Bush. BTW: Some off-topic listening as well. Charles Mingus-New Tijuana Moods (RCA Victor) Sonny Rollins-The Sound of Sonny (OJC) Billy Cobham-Stratus (Inakustik) Weather Report-Sweetnighter (Columbia) Herbie Hancock-Thrust/Sextand (Columbia/Legacy) Eric Dolphy-Live in Germany (Magnetic) Sun Ra-Planet Earth/Low Ways (Evidence) Art Blakey-The Jazz Messengers (Columbia/Legacy) ...and the list goes on...
