I must say I was really let down by this movie, and IMHO the soundtrack could have been a *lot* better. They kept playing the title track over and over again during the film, which IMHO is the weakest track out of the bunch (some blasse acid type line with yes! the amen over the top done very plainly). All the other tracks, while good, came out a while ago, and for the most part I think we have heard them all already. They used the first track off of Incanabula, but it was mixed too quietly on the movie- you could barely hear it. Music aside, I was also not blown away by the plot itself; I was really expecting a much deeper movie than I saw. I mean the whole number theory thing is interesting, but really I thought we were past that whole cyber/techy everything is numbers and fractals type aesthetic already... anyway I suppose if you weren't into IDM or didn't work at a company that lives and dies by number crunching, you might enjoy the film. It wasn't bad really... Nate On Wed, 22 Jul 1998, Agarwalla, Niraj wrote:

Picked up an advance during David Holmes' gig at Smartbar in Chicago during Billboard.... about 70% of it is brilliant! Here's the tracklisting: Clint Mansell - [pi]r2 Orbital - P.E.T.R.O.L. Autechre - Kalpol Intro Aphex Twin - Bucephalus Bouncing Ball Roni Size - Watching Windows (Ed Rush & Optical remix) Massive Attack - Angel Clint Mansell - We Got Da Gun David Holmes - No Man's Land Gus Gus - Anthem Banco de Gaia - Drippy Psilonaut - Slow Song Spacetime Continuum - A Low Frequency Inversion Field Clint Mansell - 2[pi]r The Clint Mansell tracks plainly bite.... lack of imagination or technical creativity.... and the Banco De Gaia track, well, it sounds like typical Banco De Gaia material. As for the rest of the compilation? I like it. Nice to here some early Autechre getting soundtrack presence (Kalpol is a wise choice from their first album, Incunabula)... and the Spacetime Continuum track could possibly be exclusive. Which leads me to ask, is it? It sounds like a remix from his collaboration with Tetsu Inoue, Electro Harmonix on Fax. That disc is one of my all-time favorite ambient records.... A Low Frequency Inversion Field track ever released? Over all, recommended if you dig these kinds of bands and you're missing most of these tracks. Bleep

Speaking of David Holmes & soundtracks, I've gotta say that his soundtrack work for "Out of Sight" is excellent! Very minimal '70s style funk - so minimal that you only hear a bassline for a couple minutes, or maybe some Rhodes electric piano, or some drums..all of which may or may not join together eventually. It might sound a little sparse, but in my opinion it added immeasurably to the tension (both sexual and otherwise) in the movie. The movie's good, too, plus about half of it was filmed in Detroit, right by where I work. Bill / dj marathon

The _New York Times_ gave it a mixed review. It liked the story, but it was down on the production value of the film: the $20,000 budget, the black and white film, the hand-held film, etc. Nevertheless it is an intriguing film, and I, for one, am going to see it. -- Niraj Agarwalla

I saw Pi last night and think it's definitely worth seeing. True, I've heard most of these tracks before, but IMO it was great that this stuff got into a movie at all. If IDM was in lots of movies, then you'd be right - they could have done better. But you don't hear this stuff in the movies too often. As for the plot, I thought the themes about the dangers of attaining absolute knowledge and the relationship between genius and madness were well done. The two mathemeticians (& the computer) couldn't handle the complete self-awareness brought by understanding the number and it destroyed them. Ignorance is bliss I guess. Some parts were a little heavy handed though. Like the part where he screams at the jewish cult members that they're not pure and he is - too overdramatic. All in all, not a bad piece of work for $20,000. Thumbs up. Does anyone know of any other movies with significant IDM content?

Transmissions, a sweeping documentry, that is a series of interviews with famous people. It's kinda short and I really wish it could've dwelt longer on certain people however I still really liked it just as a chance to put some faces to the names I hear so often.

well, there was this cyberculture/technology-in-our-lives type of documentary called "Synthetic Pleasures" released like a year ago. not sure where it got played, but i saw it opening night at this small theater in NYC called Cinema Village - and interestingly enough, the director, some asian lady, can't remember the name, was there for chit chat. she mentioned briefly that at the last minute her movie had been knocked from the schedules of a lot of larger theaters in NYC and she was in danger of losing even more than she had originally "planned". oh, there was also something about her sleeping with the guy who financed her movie...her husband perhaps...ha! sooo, that should provide you with some insight into the production, reception, and overall politics of IDM. anyway, i believe the soundtrack got released and was hyped for a while - i recognised some of the stuff from old astralwerks comps, like Jaydee (sp?) for example. there are some extremely funny moments in the movie, like the japanese toys, and some awe-inspiring as well - indoor downhill skiing (also in Japan, of course). the message got muddled and confusing after a while, but it was nice that semi-IDMish music got played in the background for about 90% of the movie. so, go see it, if possible...it even has a cameo from one of my philosophy professors as well...

My apologies if this is old news... Just came across the soundtrack for the movie "Pi" of which I have never heard, beyond, obviously, this CD. The flick is scored by Clint Mansell (I'm afraid that name rings no bells for me, but is vaguely familiar for some reason)...Also featured are Banco de Gaia, Orbital, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Roni Size, Massive Attack, Gus Gus, David Holmes (Who?), Psilonaut and Spacetime Continuum. Old stuff from Orbital, Aphex and Autechre as far as I can tell... In general, it's all pretty ok. Released on Thrive records...again, I draw a blank... Dist by Sire... -=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=- "I paint what I think, not what I see..." - Pablo Picasso "You're not the boss of me!..." - J. A.
