hi all-
quoted 2 lines I am very suspicious of composers who are trying to communicate something>I am very suspicious of composers who are trying to communicate something >very specific in their music.
why? this would be suggesting that all art be devoid of pointed meaning dictated by the artist. the artist is nothing more than a vessel to communicate form or lack thereof but never allowed to slink down the back alley of meaning? i think the opening statement is the crux of this entire discussion. why must we feel suspicious of content? the only thing i can think of in answer to this question is that we don't particularly agree with the content and therefore feel a need to blot it out because it's mere presence makes us uncomfortable. this level of suspicion seems to be a thread running through many different mediums of artistic expression. the post-modern aesthetic has been seeping out of art into music, design and pop-culture more so than ever before bringing to the surface many questions with difficult answers, perhaps even no answer (if that was the point of the artist.). this makes us confused and not so surprisingly, angry. where's that comfortable space? it's been obscured. i applaud artists who create music that is highly content-driven in a world where such forthright expression is condemned and subtly self-censored. thanks to them for opening up this very important dialogue. marie kacmarek http://www.urbansounds.com "Information is not content." Stuck at work here... I don't see the problem in communication or meaning in art, but rather the attempt to convey something very specific. As I said, the attempt is bound to fail -- and if not, you will never know anyway. In particular, if you are not dealing in some type of common vocabulary (as in spoken or written word, body language, conventional harmony, or boom-boom-boom) then communication becomes very difficult. In large part, it's a practical matter, not a philosophical or aesthetic issue. All you can say for sure is that the music had a certain meaning for -you-. Sorry if this is wandering too far off topic. --Mark __ <http://www.xnet.com/~mkolmar/BurningRome> < MPEG & RA audio clips > Forthcoming CD SENSELESS on Mindfield Records MINDCD03 Cathartium 14 "The electricity is no better off than on."
