well, why the hell do you need reviews when you can listen to them yourself!!!?? and why the hell are you whining about people whining about a-musik and mego?!! never the less, here's a quick review of the last mego disc i bought. it's not exactly new, but whatever... unlike a lot of people on this list, when posting stupid rants and petty arguments.(if you're going to at all), like the one i'm about to go off on, try to offset it with something that is of BENIFIT to the list. Try it, and see how much respect you gain from other list members. People like Lance McGannon, Brock Suter, Brap, and, formerly, sm@mfr are all perfect examples of focusing on FACTS, DATA and USEFUL OPINIONS in thier messages, as opposed to petty arguments, and mad props to them. unfortunetly they are in a minority of the list, as too many others are too concerned with boosting their own 'online ego' or something. anyway, i better stop before i end up unsubbing ;-), so on to the review.. Farmers Manuel 12"(Mego 017) The manuel comes through once again and, as always it is a strange one, indeed. Ten untitled tracks, eight of which are on the flip side. Lock Grooves?- you bet! Just about every track on the B side ends with one! The music might appeal to fans of Autechre. Unlike Sean and Rob,however, Farmers Manuel put less emphasis on the melodic aspect and more on the abstract rhythms and samples. My personal favorite, track B6, starts off with an ae-esque beat before it slowly dissolves into complete static. Also present are various oddities such as tribal beats (B7), 50's (sl)easy listening stuff (B4), looped piano solos with strange squelches on top (B8), Minimal fucked-up quasi-ambient pieces (B2), and 4/4 beats over a shifting windy 'melody' (A2). Another strong release from Mego and highly recomended. - also, for those who are too cheap to buy a disc, even with a review and ra samples, there's falsch, the mego sublabel who's releases are available (in they're entirety) only via real audio. poke around at the mego site@http://www.Austria.EU.net/frank/mego/ also, any opinions on any of those mego 'specialty' discs i saw in pj's mailout a couple weeks ago? there were like a dozen of them. the irony of it all... we finally get a mego discussion on after gil leaves ;-) mult-* -*http://members.xoom.com/multsanta/*-

I also have Live and Final Fridge, but my version was released on the German Source label. I didn't think it had been released on Mego, but perhaps they made another version of it (before/after it was released on Source). Anyways, chilling stuff. ;)

(Rim shot) Besides Live And Final Fridge (my copy is on Source too), I have three Mego releases, two of which I like very much and one of which is just OK. Farmers Manual's _No_Backup_ is buzzy and experimental, with occasional beats submerging here and there. It's a rather disorienting recording, but strangely satisfying. Panasonic meets Oval might be a good reference point. (It also comes with a Mac-only CD-ROM track that I haven't played much with yet.) General Magic's _Frantz!_ is more melodic and bouncy, but still firmly rooted in IDM-ness. Imagine Atom Heart with some Richard H Kirk thrown in (with Oval occasionally showing up to mess around) and you're getting there. The one I thought was just OK was Pita's _Seven_Tons_For_Free_. The first five tracks or so are rather annoying (think "Ventolin" with crackles and static instead of beats), but the last couple of tracks are decently droney. This disc is also only 31 minutes long (FM's is 52, GM's is 62). If you have RealAudio, you can listen to these CDs in their entirety on Mego's fantastic M.DOS (Mego Direct Order Service). They offer CDs and vinyl from many labels including their own, and in most cases you can listen to at least part of the recording before you buy. The page for Mego's stuff is http://www.frank.co.at/frank/mego/mdos/mego[a].html, and you can click the Catalogue button to see the other labels they offer. The Pita and Farmers Manual are unavailable from M.DOS, but I think Playing By Ear still has some. PS: Yesterday w/regards to Grammy nominees, I missed Best Alternative Performance, where Chemical Brothers' _Dig_Your_Own_Hole_ and The Prodigy's _The_Fat_Of_The_Land_ were nominated (along with Björk, David Bowie and Radiohead). -- Adam J Weitzman -- Individual, Inc. -- weitzman@individual.com --

a couple of things i noticed on the mego site, anyone have info on:: MIMEO: Queue CD (Grob) (12/98) with Peter Rehberg, Keith Rowe, Christian Fennesz, Thomas Lehn, Phil Durrant, Gert Jan Prins, Jerome Noetinger, Markus Schmickler, Rafael Toral, Kaffe Matthews and others ie: where can i get this?!?!! (it wasn't in MDOS) also: Leerscoll / Rehberg & Bauer / Mille Plateaux, Frankfurt / CD / 11.98 Outruder / Pita / Kunstradio, Wien / CD / 6.98 are these full lengths, or just compilation tracks, because i don't remember hearing anything about them. (and no, the Pita isn't the Ri.Ci.Cle mix, that had a seperate listing) oh, and kinda related- how's the new(ish) Goem CD 'Reduktie' on Noise Museam? any one know where i can get it? (I saw it in the Staalplaat catalog, but they're server keeps rejecting my e-mails) For that matter, is the Goem 'twaalf inch' on Audio.NL worth searching out? (been on a raster kick lately) thanks.. I'm pretty sure some of you might be interested in this: NACHTSTROM 17 Songs After Midnight MEGO028 (LP vinyl) "17 songs after midnight" is the first mego release of dr. nachtstrom, a bedroom producer, who made his first live appearances at electronica potent 2 (1997) and at phonotaktik99 festival. the music of the album consists of 17 pop songs who are broken by several irritations and other more unusual stuff. the artist makes no exception in his sample resources; every style of music is welcome, from bebop to heavy metal. this album should not be related to a modern dancestyle. the music tends to be sitting between all chairs and feels comfortable there. About Nachtstrom: ... a new species of composers/performers to daylight, which called themselves "bedroom producers". the main idea is to realize your own visions of music, being your own recording engineer, graphic designer and so on. dr. nachtstrom is one of this new characters of todays music, slowly gaining recognition in the music scene. His music tries to fill the space between the buzzing and humming noises of the so-called "third vienna school" and the more song-orientated but nevertheless strange dance movement. he has no idols to relate, they are not needed anymore. _______________________________ Pietro Da Sacco, mbm@netcore.ca ~ Grooves Magazine ~ http://www.rain.org/~audio/grooves/ ~ Insound (Grooves #1) ~ http://www.insound.com/zinestand/grooves/ ~ The Circular Cosmic Spot ~ http://www.sdriver.com/spot
