Re-view: Hab / maPOd / Dot Records / DOTLP02 / Releasedate: 08.29 (it's out!) Tracks: Gold and Genetics Tu Casa Ocra Tfol Broadcast Niduq Next Door Sector Stp Save The Adults So. The last one (reviewwise anyway...) of the august triology from Dot, Hab, is by far the most impressive one. This is sunny music all the way through. As the sleeve tries to illustrate, (the high sun is integrated with HAb's face) Hab is the swedish sun over Brooklyn and it has never been shining brighter. Although I liked his first EP for Dot, this album is with it's 2 FAT slabs of vinyl slamin out about everything that have been released through this fine label (needless to say with the Quant EP as an exception - that'll be a tough one to beat), and that ain't bad... Hab's pseudo-ambientjungle a'la HangableAutobulb meets Amber meets Violator meets Spanners meets 76:14 meets Mouse on Hard Normal Daddy is so beautiful it makes a grown man cry, the cutting bleepy melodies over a ton of pads accompanied by clippering coconut 808/sample rhythms is enough to keep me all puffyeyed for a long while. Listen to >>Tu Casa<< for example, if you don't feel it, check your pulse, because you're probably dead. Brilliant bleepy-rock'n'roll mutation from mars. Hab's strength lies in the simple n naive - but VERY effective - melodies that he's pumping every track on the album full of, his feeling for harmonies and the skillful rhythmprogramming. Sometimes it is as brilliant as some things of Booth/Brown (and I never thought I'd say that about any artist). His weakness however (the only one, if I might add) is the lack of variating sounds. The melodies are mostly made out of small variations of the same sound. Listen to >>Save the Adults<< from >>The Knights Who Say Dot<<, it's a brilliant sound, but it can't really be used on every track. In that sense one might find the album a bit plain after the first listen, however, listen again and you will want to listen again. I can't stop now, and I probably have to but a new copy in a couple of months as you cant really play plasticchips (the result of TOO many spins y'know).
quoted 1 line maPOd<< really has got me in it's grip, and it won't let loose. Make this>>maPOd<< really has got me in it's grip, and it won't let loose. Make this
your first Dot purchase after Quant if you haven't got anything else from em (still waiting for a bad release - I guess this is why we're maintaining a Dot site...). With tracks like >>Next Door<<, >>Tu Casa<<, >>Save The Adults<< and >>Tfol Broadcast<< this is the heaviest album so far this year together with Hard Normal Daddy, Chiastic Slide and Black Dog Live Demo 1997. And the forecast for tomorrow is, well... SUN.
