Many people on this list care about intellectual property in music and art for several reasons. First, because it's just morally right not to rip-off other people's work and tout it as your own. And, second, the (oftentimes small) earnings we make from our work, sustains artforms and musical genres that, all too often, don't get much support. Why is a Web page author any different from a novelist or a musician if what he/she creates is wholly individual?

If this is your argument, then please explain this to the U.S. Joint Ethics Committee which upholds copyrights for Graphic Designers. Great point. I mean an acoustic musician doesn't make his/her instruments and a Breakbeat Scientist doesn't make his/her breaks. And if you feel so strongly about the light weight work put into a discog, make your own. Just don't steal one without expecting to feel the wrath.

hey now.. don't dismiss afx, sp or others.. heh I won't even talk about ppl making their own synths, er instruments.. but I for one make my own breaks and Squarepusher does too (I'm sure of it, it's not repetative at all) and probably many others. :) although I do know an amateur musician who has actually created his own analogue synth. __ __\ \ / /_\ \ \_____/ www.freq-div.home.ml.org

Is the US gummint definition of what is copyrightable is the standard for merit in creation? Is merely having a unique "look and feel" the same as a wholly orignal piece of literature or music? Not even. I didn't realize the discussion was limited only to what was copyrightable. I wasn't trying to say that Gonzi desrved to have his page swiped. Certainly not.
