All twelve of the markant records are done by Carsten Endrass from Germany in sickly limited editions ranging from 100-300 copies of each. I have #6-12 and really enjoy them. They probably compare more to skam & musik aus strom than warp & rephlex but they're all good nonetheless. My suggestion is buy them if you can find them. I have posted some Markant reviews in the past. i'll see if i still have them and repost them later. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

is this to mean that they're of the "la la la" delicate melodies over crunchy beats style? eric

no - markant has talent. seriously - i find his chord progressions and arrangements extremely moving, with no dippy melodies a la rdj, mike p, dmx. nothing rephlex has ever really done has ever really done anything for me (except squarepusher and seefeel). markant, however, combines the moving chord progressions and string usage of old-skool detroit and older autechre, with some vaguely hip-hoppish beats found on the mancunian labels, with the sense of space and depth found on CR/BC/M records. einstuerzende neubauten "NNNAAAMMM" * #### a disturbance in a system. #### laerm. @voicenet.com #### a fortune cookie i ate 08/06/98 told me: "a girlfriend is a wine bottle. a wife is a bottle of wine."

Hello, The only MARKANT release I've ever owned was #1, and I didn't really get into it at the time so I just dubbed it onto minidisc and traded it. But I recently had another listen to it, and it's actually quite good... a nice mixture of crunchy beats, dark atmospherics, layered synths & interesting melodies. It's got me wondering what the other Markant releases are like - more of the same, I presume? How many are there? The last I heard it was up to about 25!? I wonder if anyone actually owns them all... Is there a Markant web site? i think i have 11 of the first 12, and i couldnt really tell the difference between them. to me, they just seemed sort of dull. or it could have been an overload of that sound as they seemed to come out every week or so. if anyone is looking to complete the early part of their markant collection (most were limited to 2 00 or 300) get in touch. none were played more than twice. cl --- clietz@enteract.com On Thu, 2 Dec 1999 10:37:55 Aca wrote:

Greetings, What do people think of Markant releases? I can't quite decide if they are worth the $$. Recently I picked up #9 and #5. #5 struck me as the only one which will get too much play from me, #9 is sort of dry for my tastes, the tracks are, in general, very underdeveloped. (which isn't to say they're too sparse, just not well though out) Should I check out the latest 2x12"? I've heard that it's different than their (his?) earlier releases. later Andrew -| Andrew Schrock | aschrock@cs.brandeis.edu |- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think the general consensus on Markant is that he proves it doesn't take a lot of time to produce IDM and that he is also the polarized IDM producer (everything is wicked limited and he releases tons of records). Generally Markant disappoints, there is one record though that I think stands out. Markant 12; some very beautiful emotive music. It is the only one I've heard of his which I feel was inspired at all. Just in case some body cares, Christophe AeOtaku@aol.com wrote:

What is it that seperates 12 from the others? Just out of curiousity; I might pick it up if there are elements in there which would ensure it's not totally 'naff.

But notice how even though his 12"ches are wicked limited, they aren't exactly in demand. Even on ebay they go for $10-15 all the time. Sometimes for that much they don't even get any bids. Personally, If I were joe superstar IDM producer (or as superstar as they get), I'd like to make my music as available as possible. That way everybody could hear it. I don't know, the melodic elements seem to work. Instead of the usual mulch of stringy saccharine synth strumming over a constant loop. For me it somehow has a nostalgic sad feel about it. What's "naff" mean? Andrew Schrock wrote:

Markant #5 has really acidy filtered beats and synth lines.. But I can see the development into trite-sounding IDM progressing up from #5. Who knows, sometimes artists hit it on the head and, well, sometimes they miss. Yeah, "sad sounding".. where's the IDM version of emo rock? Or perhaps without guitars or lyrics it doesn't translate too well.
quoted 1 line What's "naff" mean?> What's "naff" mean?
Naff == Wack, weak, lame, "lacking in essential qualities" if we get technical. I think it's an english term? I must have picked it up when I lived in the UK for 6 months in middle school. So perhaps it's massively outdated, but I still say "rad", so maybe it's better not to listen to me.
