I feel it's my duty as a responsible list member to warn people about
this Alec Empire business. I went to the see him and Shizuo last night
at the Trubador in Hollywood and it was a fucking joke. Alec played the
same lock grove for 30 minutes, walking away from the turntable and
going upstairs for a bite to eat. When he came back he played a bunch of
distorted ultrafast breakbeat DHR crap with like scraming and stuff.
Really horrible. And believe me, I LIKE distorted ultrafast breakbeat,
but this was truly stupid. His dj skills consisted of ridiculously blunt
crossfades, throwing records, and scratching like a 3 year old. Shizuo
played a live set that was basically more of the same except he kept
saying "fuck you I'm Shizuo" in a broken english accent. Not one person
I talked to enjoyed it in the least bit. Cheers to green galactic/public
space for putting it on though, none of what happened last night was
their fault. They have some truly great shows coming up with IDM
all-stars.
The weirdest incident of the night (among many) was when I ran into a
drunk english guy that looked EXACTLY like Grant Claridge who told me
the show was "fucking shit" and later when I asked what his name was
told me "fuck off...thats my name," with a little smile that said he
knew he was being naughty. The whole rest of the night I was dogged by
this feeling it very well may have been grant (mike dred is playing at a
rave on saturday) so I looked all over for him but couldn't find him
again. Quite unnerving. I went so far as to have the girl check the
guest list but no go.
