Yeah, I was thinking about this a while back, and (after some discussions with real musicians) came to similar conclusions. It's all >technically< possible now, but the interface is a really sticky area. Musicians are too used to physical controls, which for your one-box studio, means you'll need some configurable controllers. The proposals for DirectInput provide an API to do this, but I digress. What's lacking is the will to do all this. Can you see AKAI making their nice profitable samplers obsolete, and entering the software market instead? Maybe Steinberg, but it'll cost a fortune, and be pirated on an enormous scale, so we'll all get to play with it. Well, here's hoping. Phil PS ObIDM: How were Autechre & the Surgeon @ the Blue Note? This whole discussion of using a computer for your entire studio brings to mind a remark by Mixmaster Morris. I could have sworn I read in a magazine a long while back that his ultimate goal was to be able to eliminate all the external keyboards, samplers, etc. and narrow it all down to a single comptuer. Does anyone else out there remember reading this as well? Perhaps the man himself would like to pipe in if he's listening. I'd love to hear his insights on this topic. | E r i c | [mail] franse@engr.arizona.edu | | F r a n s | [web] http://intermix.engr.arizona.edu/~franse | "Make the events occur that you want to occur" - The Black Dog
