Can someone give me a review of Spring HEel Jack's album that was just released domesticly :58 Million Shades(or soemthing like that). What does it sound like? I'm thinking about buying it while being under the impression that its not cheesy diva-vocal(LTJ Bukem +Liquid Sky crap) stuff, while also assuming its nowhere close to Squarepusher or Plug, or, erm, well the newest RDJ or u-Ziq. So where does that leave them? what's the style? Is this their best release or should i pursue a diff one...? thanks!! andy ps: I saw Richie HAwint mixmag live recently, I know this is old, but... is it any good(his material on it? who else?) thanks

Springhield JAck's 68 million shades is a really amazing D n' B record. The sound is really moody breaks with bits of of jazzy and guitar layered on top. I'd put them right dab in the middle. They'd probably fit in the same area as the plug record but without the sense of humour. And don't worry , no cheeezy divas in sight. ROB

*Sixty* eight actually, just for accuracy's sake...
quoted 1 line What does it sound like?> What does it sound like?
Somewhat clinical d'n'b with the rough edges largely smoothed. Some good dubby bass lines and dub-plate echo effects. Occasional effective use of guitar-like samples. Big on synthpad washes and obviously pretty snap and crackly on the snares, but after a while I found myself losing interest through the experience of a certain sameness of sound. More "dirt" and less polish would perhaps have helped...

It is safe. Low cheese and diva-free zone.
quoted 1 line while also assuming its nowhere close to Squarepusher or Plug,> while also assuming its nowhere close to Squarepusher or Plug,
Not as quirky. Less "avant garde". Generic barriers in unpushed back mode.

ditto... less playful and smirkily knowing too

MOR d'n'b?

_There Are Strings_ is their previous full-length. This is generally regarded as a stronger release though. alan/beyondthebristolsound

Get the new single, Bank of America. Harder and denser and more flavor. I can't help but think the Bank of America theme has something to do with conquering the great expanse of U$A. Why do brits do this ? Suede ? uh...Blur/Oasis ? tacky. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chris Sattinger new records coming on : Headspace (UK, feb) , Synewave(feb), Subvoice(Japan, feb), Sativae(?)
