What some people in more culturally affluent cities (NYC, London, SF, etc.) don't realize is that radio airplay content is even worse in the smaller, less culturally affluent cities, and those that know better and live in these small cities have very little to listen to. I'll take Chem. Bros. or Prodigy ANY DAY OF THE WEEK over the likes of The Offspring, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc. ,blah, blah. We're not saying it's great, it's just a damn sight better. And it will only improve the overall spectrum of sounds that so called "alternative radio" can provide. Halve Phun, James

Recently "Firestarter" by Prodigy has been featured on the "Top 5 at 5" countdown on local (Chicago) station Q101 (WKQX). Most recent IDM-related track to do the same is "Born Slippy" by Underworld (track 2/vocal version, with early fade). This is more noteworthy than similar airplay in, say, NYC, because Chicago radio is well-known for clinging to previous trends. In light of certain programming decisions at MTV, a short article in the new Rolling Stone, and so on: Is the US market about to find an alternative to Alterative? Well (whether or not it would translate well into my living room), I'd much rather hear Prodigy than 1000 more Seattle-lite bands. --Mark P.S. NIN's "Perfect Drug" is a song which predates _Pretty Hate Machine_, given a shiny new coat of paint. __ <http://www.xnet.com/~mkolmar/BurningRome> ==> MPEG audio clips <== m u s i c : w e b : s o u n d d e s i g n : h t m l : c g i : e t c "We invented machines in order to reduce our work. If it's the one I heard on the radio then it sucks rocks. I think it's the vocal version? at least that's what someone called it on this list a while back. and I'd rather hear some alternative than that, but at least it's a start. Born Slippy too, even though I'm not too much of a fan of that track. -- Hillie aka Aurafix / PHD ja DAMONES hillien kotisivu - http://www.clark.net/pub/buh/index.html easy internet services - http://huizen.dds.nl/~eis Do re mi fa so la ti.. NY airplay is so incredibly crappy and uncool, especially for a city as cool as NYC. I think almost every other medium to large city in the country can point to a local radio station that's better than any of ours. We only have 2 jazz stations, and one of them plays kenny g and natalie cole all day! Can any New Yorkers recommend IDM stations in NYC? Or stations which may occasionally play stuff? Stations which are actually receivable? -CF

occasionally play stuff? Stations which are actually receivable?< Your best bet would be 89.1 WNYU which broadcasts the "New Afternoon" show weekdays from 4:30PM - 7:00PM. I've heard a lot of Warp stuff (AFX, Disjecta, Freeform), plus System 7 and Jega. The only drawback is the indie rock is played in between. Still, worth checking out. On Wednesday nights at 9:00PM, they do an ambient show. Haven't listened to it though. Paul Rafanello intone@warwick.net

It's partially true when it comes to radio. But I have to say that NYC more than makes up for it with its culture. Lots of underground cultures with live events are happening all around. It just takes lots of effort to keep up with it. pn Jungle - the sound of the underground

Yucky! The only thing AFAIK from a major label that's listenable as far as jungle goes is EBTG Vs.
