Just got the compilation "jazz satellites vol.1:electrification" today and went straight to listen to the tracks by 23 skidoo and the pop group. I do like "industrial" and stuff by these groups are extremely hard to come by...and boy am I surprised, the 23 skidoo track sound really similar to what Red Snapper is doing now! I've always come across articles that tries to intellectually forge the link between the 80's industrial/experimental/avant-funk scene to what we like now...now I'm convinced. Tracks like these would not seem out of place standing beside jungle, leftfield hip-hop or "intelligent" techno(black dog etc.) tunes. Some of the good stuff that were produced in recent times involves people from the 80's scene...Rob Haigh, funki porcini etc. These are indeed "bad" times to be young and into music! So, Glad to see that a few people have picked up on the value of the "Jazz Satellites" compilation on Virgin UK! Many of the artists that are featured on this double disc set have been so influential (and sampled!) on many of the artists discussed on the idm list... Herbie Hancock, 23 Skidoo, Ornette Coleman, Organisation, Roland Kirk, Ry Cooder, Miles Davis... have all played a major role in shaping the sounds of everyone from Squarepusher to Red Snapper to Tortoise to Bedouin Acent (no wonder he's featured too!)! Eagerly awaiting for Volume II with hopes of tracks from Liquid Liquid, A Certain Ratio, Wolfgang Dauner, Patrick Gleeson, and other influential "jazz" artists who ought to be heard by all on this list! discreetly, l.b.
