In the new issue of Raygun, Trent Reznor cites Wagon Christ, along with Aphex Twin and De La Soul [!] as his current musical influences and preferences. Never liked Trent's politics, but visualizing him listening to Throbbing Pouch brings a smile to my face. With the current bickering about the commercial bastardization of "our music," Trent makes an interesting point in his interview. If memory serves, he's become interested with drum'n'bass and electronica because rock has become boring. There's something nasty to be said about trend-hoppers who are getting into Orbital and Prodigy because it's "the Next Big Thing," but I don't see something wrong with changing one's focus or interests because what they enjoyed in the past has now become irritating. His interview was insightful; I encourage the current IDM nay-sayers to give it a glance. One distressing sight. I was one firefly last night, and one of the server-push advertisements read: "If you like ORBITAL and the PRODIGY, you'll love UNDERWORLD. Visit tvtrecords.som" Such advertising tactics scare me. Those interested in abstract hip hop should really look into Rec on the Skint label. Very different vibes. A full length should be out in February. And whoever posted about velocette is right; very underrated and worthy of more attention. I heard his live shows are fantastic. Thanks to everyone who helped me with my Vibert page problem.

The problem is that most of us realized that "rock [and Industrial] has become boring" about 5 years ago. If Trent had put out a Techno album in 1992, it would have been interesting. Doing Drum n' Bass in '97 is guaranteed to raise cries of "bandwagon jumper!", even if it *is* his current infatuation. (I'm still trying to get past the fact that the non-Dn'B bits of "Perfect Drug" sound like the same ol' same ol', and the video is still drenched in Goff imagery that I tired of long ago ... ) [ Very cool playlist elided. Musta terrorized those Christian Texans (-: ] I'm actually quite interested in this whole U.S. "Techno next big thing! Prodigy! Chemical Brothers! Underworld! OK, OK, Orbital too! And ... uh, wait, are there any more?" upswell. It seems to have appeared virtually out of nowhere. Did it really begin with the MTV Executive Decision and announcement? Does anybody remember? - Greg

Reminds me of what a freind said to me the other day while on the phone with him at work... Him - "What are you listening to?" Me- "Autechre" Him - "What's that? Techno?" Me -(wincing 'cause I KNOW what he calls techno) "Well yeah...sort of...I guess electronica is more appropriate." Him - "Oh yeah! Hey you have to hook me up with some of that, Spin Magazine says it's gonna be the next big thing" Me- (shaking my head in silence) This is from the same guy who said to me last year that "listening to bands like Dishwala and Bush was better than listening to techno all day long". My sad pathetic trendy freinds... On a similar note... You know when it's getting bad when you hear the Firestarter single being played over and over again in the local electronics store - in this case a Wiz in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NYC. It's even worse when you consider the kind of area this is. Meathead Guido would be an understatement. Ahh well Eric

This is another funny thing about the emergence of "techno" in America. Two summers ago, I spent two weeks in Marfa, Texas on holiday. [If anyone on the list knows what/where Marfa is, you can share in my misery.] I met some really attractive gal there and, upon asking me what kind of music I listen to, I told her "techno." She replied, "oh, I *LOVE* techno!" Excited and horny, I ran to the car to get my Case Logic travel pack. Inside: Prodigy - Music For a Jilted Generation Massive Attack - No Protection Orb - Orbvs Terrarvm Orbital - Diversions FSOL - Lifeforms Path 1-7 various lame compilations. I returned to her, showed her my goods, and she responded, "you don't have any 2 Unlimited?" I died.

This is exactly why I hate that word "techno." When people ask me what kind of music I listen to, I always say electronic (listening) music, well that's not 100% accurate either, but it beats techno. If they don't know what it is, ah well, I tell them it's sortof like techno. Well? Did you score? :) I'm not going to try to pick up a chick with electronica if it doesn't work. -Naylor- _____________________________________ ___ \GothCode2.5: GoSS3Mu3??$ TJtInG \___ /\ <jnaylor@indiana.edu> )_( /cDBRp7 PLShDe M3p1w Z!!GoiTeiTez C6 \/\/\__________________________)_( / \a22+ b65T H182 g5T w6T r3bs h3_/\/\/ T.F.W.O.: Totally ) (/ /s10__k2(5)__Rz___SsNy__N0993__LusIN_/ \/ Fucking Weirded Out! Sounds to me like a perfect opportunity to assure that if he gets into the lame stuff, it won't be from lack of exposure to the good stuff. For God's sake, hook the guy up! -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo@swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo)

I was cruisin' my local record shop lookin to pick up that new RDJ album (the one with that scene from "The Shining" on the cover ;) when I saw the following: Art of Noise : Fon Remixes - This one's got mixes from Graham Massey, LFO and others Art of Noise :Drum and Bass mixes Basically my question is this: what's the skinny on these two? Would I have to be a die-hard AoN fan to enjoy these releases or do they stand up on their own? Oh yeah, another thing...I saw an Atari Teenage Riot 12" called something like mind your own business or something and one of the tunes had a title about slaughtering ravers...If anyone knows what the hell I'm talking about, please gimme a review. It's cheap enough such that I'd get it if it had an iota of humor/entertainment value. khannan suntharam kxs28972@bayou.uh.edu

I think most die-hard AoN fans hate them, because they don't really have a lot to do with AoN (the FON mixes do include a bit more of the originals than the drum & bass ones, which might as well be all new tracks, with one or two exceptions). If you like the artists who did the remixes, these albums are worth checking out.
