STOP PRESS In an as yet unpublished interview with the Norwegian youth magzine 'Spirit' Aphex Twin has announced that he'll be retiring from the music business one year from now. Instead he and some mates are going to be working on "some inventions" which they have patent applications for at the momemt. "it's become all to easy to release stuff, it's neither fun nor a challenge any more" he said. "in fact you're only the third person to hear this" he said to the interviewer. This news has been confirmed by the editor of said magazine. Who'll be the first to write an orbituary, then...... :) Oyvind 'Oyvers' Eggen Department Manager Soul/Dance Virgin Megastore, Oslo, Norway.

Relax! Remember when good ole RDJ said he made his own kustom drum machine and then one of his techies revealed that he had just removed the cover to a "drumfire" and placed its innards inna black box? I suspect his "inventions" will be of a simliar ilk: patent attorney: But Mr. James...all you've done is placed another person's invention in a different box...you can't claim a patent for that. RDJ: But why not?! That's what I do with all my albums! patent attorney: Uhm...please leave my office Mr. James. RDJ: To hell with this! I'm going back to music! right? khannan suntharam kxs28972@bayou.uh.edu

First off, he isn't finished with his Warp contract. How much does he have left? Where does this leave Rephlex records if he is indeed retiring from the entire 'music business?' I find this all a bit hard to believe. _____ / ,-,_) /,_) (/ RESH Live & Direct from the G-Spot, Orange County, California, USA

Come on! Let's remember who this is that we're talking about. We all know the guy is 100% chock full o' shit - an admitted liar. As I recall, when they pulled the plug on him at Woodstock, he said, "I'm never going to play a live show again." And what's he doing now? Hmm? Am I the only one here who doesn't quite believe that tombstone belongs to his dead brother? I just don't think his parents are that stupid to name him after his dead brother. It's not like the name Rick James is all that uncommon. Spliff

Three albums, according to NME. Two albums, according to a radio interview.

I think and hope that Rephlex can survive without Richard. Isn't Grant the boss anyway?

Well, RDJ has always said that he doesn't release records because he wants people to listen to his music; he releases them because he doesn't want to get a "proper" job. Both in the latest NME interview and in a recent Swedish radio interview he has said that he is going to retire after his contract with Warp is finished, so this isn't actually any "hot" news. In contrast to some other people I don't believe that he is lying in this remark. It's just a feeling that I have. Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if he changed his mind in the future -- look at the KLF for example, they said they would never enter the music business again and they still released two more tracks (one limited single and one track on the "Help" compilation).
