I was sitting here yesterday, so sad that the Aphex release date is months away, and I was wondering: In cases like this [Orbital _In Sides_ and Autechre _Tri Repetae_ come immediately to mind] where the US release is so delayed, is it usually the original label trying to soak up import sales, or is the licensing label just v e r y, v e r y s l o w ? "Course I like the idea of the US release bundling eps with long-players, so it's not all bad, but couldn't they speed it up a notch? <grumble> Brian who's hoping beyond hope that they include the HAB eps on the new US double [hey, it could happen] CD...

You're right. Warp, like many labels, is delaying the release in hopes of selling more pieces worldwide before Warner takes over.. This is bollocks. We don't export Aphex directly to the US in *any* case - Sire/Warner is our Aphex licensee there, so we can't export into their territory. We get paid for every Aphex record Sire/Warner sell. Unfortunately however Sire/Warner have never really been able to release simultaneously, because a) they have to fit it into their release schedule b) they take much longer to release records from receipt of a master. It's as simple as that. Incidently WEA Japan have put in a real effort and are releasing near simulateously in Japan (in a few weeks) - and we're really happy about this. They are also releasing a compilation of Aphex single tracks (various from On, Ventolin and Donkey Rhubarb). g.

Yet they get here, via American distributors buying them from UK distributors.

Sire/Warner, for a heartless conglomerate, should be commended for sticking with Aphex Twin. As far as I know the US releases of SAW and I Care basically tanked, and according to the Warner's A&R rep I spoke with, RDJ was very uncooperative with their promotional efforts. They have done some things (like releasing both Ventolin EP's in one package) that were a real entertainment value. Remember, WB was the label of Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, Ed Sanders, and many other weird and uncommercial bands over the years. You heard it here first (or maybe not) -- the next AFX record on Sire is going to sell more than the rest of his US releases combined. The high school kids are getting into stuff like this. It's just a matter of time before RDJ will be on MTV making a fool out of Kennedy... --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Stop thinking, and end your problems" -- Tao Te Ching Home Page, featuring Reagan on Black Velvet, the EMP Compilation CD, samples of my music, etc http://soli.inav.net/~kent/ Kent Williams kent@inav.net CADSI 2651 Crosspark Road Coralville IA 52241 (319) 338 6053 (home) (319) 626 6700 x 219 (work) (319) 626 3489 (fax)

There is nothing we can do about that, short of not selling any in our territory.

Absolutely. I am not criticising Sire/Warner in the slightest, I think it's pretty amazing that they have done what they have done. They are really getting behind the latest album.

Compared to Madonna yeah, but for a 'techno' artist they sold well.

I really hope it does. because at the moment the USA (relatively) is a complete void for us at the moment. Very, very few (major) record companies in the USA have the guts to put out anything that doesn't have vocals, guitars and pop personalities. That's just the way the US music industry works apparently. g.

SAW II I think they pressed something like 100K copies, but only sold 15K. I've not seen it come up yet in cut out bins but it should be quite a bargain when it does.

What I'm basing my prediction on RDJ from is the fact that the local record shop has moved about 20 copies of Jake Slazenger "Das ist ein Groovy Beat Ja" on import to high school students. Jungle is starting to be something the high school hipsters are snapping up as well. The most conservative customers, ironically are the DJ's -- most won't touch it if it's not Chicago house or Tresor-style trance. --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Stop thinking, and end your problems" -- Tao Te Ching Home Page, featuring Reagan on Black Velvet, the EMP Compilation CD, samples of my music, etc http://soli.inav.net/~kent/ Kent Williams kent@inav.net CADSI 2651 Crosspark Road Coralville IA 52241 (319) 338 6053 (home) (319) 626 6700 x 219 (work) (319) 626 3489 (fax)

Recently, *both* alternative stations here in Boston have added a techno track to their playlist. (I'm basing it on the fact that I've heard each song more than once on that station during normal play hours.) The songs stick out against the backdrop of REM and Lemonheads, but it's sure fun to hear them in the car. Surprisingly, the better of the two stations (IMHO) made the worse choice. WFNX, one of the first alternative stations in the country (started with this format in 1983 and has stuck with it), with a more classic alternative format (high variety of stuff, many different styles), chose to add The Prodigy's "Firestarter," which is, at best, really irritating, especially with the vocals. I much prefer the tracks on _Jilted_ to this song. WBCN, a more "rock"-y alternative station (more Gravity Kills, less Tori Amos) that recently switched over to this format and still plays an occasional Metallica song, added Orbital's "The Box," which is by far the top runner in my "least likely to leave my head any time soon once entered" award of 1996. Anyways, I like this. I think it's good that radio is taking a chance on this type of music. I hope it gets a posiitve enough response that they start branching out a little. -- Adam J Weitzman "Getting [your computer] to work is no more Individual, Inc. difficult than building a nuclear reactor weitzman@individual.com from wristwach parts using only your teeth." http://www.individual.com - Dave Barry

I listen to WZBC on Tuesday and Thursday nights religiously (dub on Tuesday, IDM and other on Thursday), but Sunday night I'm not even up that late. I don't own a cassette player with a timer. :-( -- Adam J Weitzman "Getting [your computer] to work is no more Individual, Inc. difficult than building a nuclear reactor weitzman@individual.com from wristwach parts using only your teeth." http://www.individual.com - Dave Barry
